Scientists from the Institut Pasteur genetically analyzed the remains of former soldiers who retreated from Russia in 1812. They detected two pathogens, those responsible for paratyphoid fever and relapsing fever, that correlate with the symptoms described in historical accounts. A comprehensive analysis of more than 5.2 million hospitalizations reveals an alarming increase in cases of severe diverticulitis among Americans younger than 50.
