Focus on more fiber, meatless Mondays and clean eating for longevity. I believe that FIBER will be the most talked about nutrient in our mainstream media in 2025. It has already started, due to the popularity of Dan Buettner and Blue Zones Project. Blue Zones are generally plant forward. Each zone eats LOTS of vegetables, only whole grains, daily beans and legumes, about two handfuls of nuts a day, and a small amount of meat, fish, and dairy. In my opinion, beans and legumes are absolutely delicious, easy to make, and good sources of protein, and they pair naturally with…
Recently updated on November 4, 2024 at 09:45 am If you have asthma, you may wonder if certain natural remedies, such as ashwagandha, are safe for you. Rest assured, ashwagandha is generally considered safe for people with asthma, and its use for respiratory health has roots in traditional medicine in places like India and Pakistan. For centuries, this powerful herb has been part of Ayurvedic practices aimed at easing respiratory problems and supporting lung health. Today, science is revealing how ashwagandha supports lung health, with early studies showing that it can help reduce airway inflammation and reduce lung stress—both key…
Completing ten years of work to stem the tide of myopia, David Berntsen, Golden-Golden Professor of Optometry and chair of Clinical Sciences at the University of Houston College of Optometry, reports that his team’s method for slowing myopia not only works—but lasts. The original Bifocal Lenses In Nearsighted Kids (BLINK) study showed that children with myopia wearing high-power multifocal contact lenses slow its progression. Now, new results from the BLINK2 Study – which continued after these children – found that the benefits continue even after the lenses are no longer used. “We found that one year after discontinuing treatment with…
I’m sharing my thoughts on two of the most popular clothing rental services, Rent Runway Unlimited and Nuuly.
Misinformation about food ingredients is a cause for concern and I fear the trend will continue in 2025. Whether it’s using “seed oils” (vegetable oils like canola, soybean, sunflower) or eating foods with artificial food coloring, these topics have continued to cover the social media feed in distorted ways. Is there really a concern? I have written about seed oils before, as have many my colleagues. Social media personalities, many without any nutritional training or clinical background, like to hold a conspiracy or two and rant about them. The goal is generally to grab your attention, instill fear in the…
A new artificial intelligence tool called MISO (MultI-tropical smalloutdoors THEmicrophones) can detect cancer characteristics at the cellular level by examining data from extremely small pieces of tissue—some as small as 400 square micrometers, equivalent to the width of five human hairs. Developed by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the tool analyzes reams of data and can apply information to even the tiniest points in medical imaging. It could guide doctors to the individual treatments that work best for a variety of cancers, according to a new paper detailing MISO published today in Nature…

Men who act like adults Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with countless men trying to explore the complexities of adulthood as a men’s therapist in Chicago. A recurring theme in our sessions is the quest to embody the characteristics that define a mature, responsible and emotionally intelligent man. Coming of age is not just about reaching a certain age or reaching social milestones. It’s about adopting mindsets and behaviors that reflect maturity, integrity and responsibility. In today’s fast-paced and often chaotic world, these traits are more important than ever. They not only help you live…
Understanding your baby’s development and the changes that occur in your body each week can make this experience more meaningful and less scary. This guide will explore what happens during the 2nd week of pregnancy – a time marked by exciting biological processes such as ovulation and fertilization. If you’re a first-time mother or just curious about those early stages, you’re in the right place. Can you confirm pregnancy at 2 weeks? At two weeks pregnant, it’s technically too early to confirm pregnancy through a test. This period is often when ovulation occurs, an important part of pregnancy. During ovulation,…
Isotretinoin, commonly referred to as Accutane, is the only approved medical treatment that can provide long-term remission of severe acne. Although it is highly effective, some people experience a recurrence of acne after a course of treatment. A new study by researchers at Mass General Brigham looked at how often acne returns after isotretinoin and what factors may put patients at risk for acne recurrence. They found that acne recurrence requiring treatment with oral medication, such as oral antibiotics, spironolactone or another course of isotretinoin, occurred in about 1 in 5 patients, more often among women and those who had…
