Unveiling Men’s Sexual Wellness: A Look at Erectile Dysfunction and Innovative Solutions

From: Dr. Paul Gittens

Always consult your doctor for immediate, specific and personal medical advice you may need.

Men usually don’t think much about their penis or their sexual health until there is a problem. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common problem faced by men, yet the stigma surrounding it often prevents them from seeking medical help. As one of the nation’s leading experts on male and female sexual function, and a board-certified urologist, I hope to shed some light on ED by delving into the causes and presenting innovative solutions that I use to provide results for my patients.

Factors that may contribute to erectile dysfunction:

Erectile dysfunction is a condition that affects 30 million men in the United States. Men are more likely to develop ED as they age, but men in their early twenties and thirties can also have this problem. A variety of factors can affect erectile function, including certain diseases or conditions, medications, hormonal abnormalities, health-related factors such as being overweight and engaging in heavy drinking or smoking. for ED. I think of my role as a sexual medicine specialist, like an NFL running back, evaluating where to run through a gap on the line. I do a thorough one-hour assessment with all my patients that consists of their medical history, trying to find all the factors that may be contributing to their ED. I then order a full hormone test and penile imaging for evaluation. After this is completed, I make recommendations about what treatment options would be most successful for their condition. Treatment options will help increase blood flow to the penis by preventing blood flow from leaving the penis and adding growth factors to help with recovery.

Many times, traditional treatments such as oral medication, counseling, and lifestyle changes can correct the problem. However, the landscape of solutions has expanded, with various options such as penis pumps, penile implants, shock wave therapy and even Botox, which I mention in the article, but the recovery options extend even beyond these.

One Choice: An Innovative Approach to ED and penile exercise

Penis pumps have gained popularity as non-invasive devices designed to treat erectile dysfunction. These devices use a vacuum technique to draw blood into the penis. Penis pumps are readily available and easy to use and can help with ED without resorting to more invasive interventions. There’s also the Xersizer, a water pump, a variation on the traditional pump. The water pump is used in the shower or bath and uses hydroelectric power to create negative pressure inside the vessel allowing maximum penile expansion. Recommended use is between 3-5 times a week. While the water pump can be used like a conventional pump for sexual spontaneity (depending on the needs of the user), the water pump’s main intention is as a private training aid.

This device has shown promise when used regularly to promote penile flow, helping to improve erectile function.

CoreWave™ Treatment: Paving the Way for Non-Invasive Solutions for ED

In recent years, shock wave therapy has emerged as a non-invasive alternative for the treatment of DM. This innovative approach uses low-intensity shock waves to stimulate the growth of blood vessels in the penis. This treatment aims to address the root cause of DM by boosting blood flow and promoting tissue regeneration. CoreWave™ is provided by urologists and physicians who focus on sexual wellness.

CoreWave™ therapy is a focused, low-intensity shockwave therapy, a non-surgical, drug-free solution that focuses wave energy painlessly on the penis. It is used off-label and is not FDA-approved for ED. CoreWave™ has its own patented protocols and results in harder and firmer erections. This treatment stimulates growth factors, helping the formation of new blood vessels and promoting increased blood flow to the erection, leading to lasting results.

This treatment is given with a wand-like device placed near different areas of the penis. A doctor moves the device along parts of the penis for about 30 minutes while sending out gentle pulses. No anesthesia is needed and there is no pain. The pulses cause improved blood flow and tissue remodeling in the penis. Both changes can lead to erections sufficient for sex. This treatment stimulates growth factors, helping to form new blood vessels for lasting results. Many patients are able to reduce or stop their prescription DM medications after the procedure.

Botox revolution, moving beyond wrinkles:

Botox is also available to treat ED. It is not FDA approved for ED and is also considered off-label. The penis by default is in a contracted state, only when a man is aroused does the penis become relaxed and erect. Botox intervenes in the process and allows the penile muscles to relax, thus facilitating improved blood flow and a more effective, sustainable erection. Several studies have shown that injecting Botox directly into the penis can provide a greater than 50% success rate in achieving an erection for men with severe ED. In addition, milder cases of DM tend to respond even more favorably to this treatment.

One of the advantages of Botox for ED is that there is no downtime. Most patients after receiving Botox will notice a difference after about two weeks. In addition, men may also notice a looser and elongated flaccid penis.

Penile implants: Permanent solutions for ED

We try to prevent men from getting penile implants, but for some it is the only option. Penile implants have a high level of satisfaction once they are placed. These devices are surgically implanted in the penis, providing the mechanical support needed to achieve and maintain an erection. Unlike other ED treatments, a penile implant restores spontaneity and allows a man to have an erection without any planning or waiting.

The device is implanted during a procedure through a small opening in the skin. Most men go home from the procedure the same day and can resume sexual activity after their doctor gives them permission, usually between 4-6 weeks. The implantation process is minimally invasive and advances in technology have led to the development of inflatable implants that closely mimic the natural process of an erection. For some patients, when pills and injections no longer work, they move to a penile implant. For other patients, they may move to a penile implant right away

In conclusion, men’s sexual health is a complex and diverse aspect of overall well-being that requires open discussion and exploration of different solutions. From traditional treatments to innovative devices such as penis pumps, hydro pumps, penile implants, shock wave therapy and Botox, there is a range of options to suit individual needs and preferences. By dispelling myths and fostering a culture of understanding, we can pave the way for men to prioritize their sexual health, leading to more satisfying and fulfilling lives. The time has come to adopt a comprehensive approach that includes the physical, psychological and rational dimensions of men’s sexual well-being.
