Jade eggs or yoni eggs are inserted into the vagina mainly for sexual health benefits. But are jade eggs or yoni eggs good for sex life?

Have you ever heard of jade eggs or yoni eggs? These are egg-like stones that are meant to be inserted into the vagina and held there for a few seconds each day. These eggs became fashionable in 2017 thanks to the website of Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow who revealed their benefits. All one has to do is insert the egg into the vagina, push it and leave it to “feel the connection with your body”. Since then, many users of jade eggs have claimed that their use can help improve the strength of the pelvic floor, which can lead to increased sexual sensation and enhanced orgasms. But inserting a foreign object into your vagina might not be the best idea. Let us tell you if yoni eggs are safe for a better sex life and why they are worth a second thought.

What are jade eggs or yoni eggs?

Jade eggs, also known as yoni eggs, are smooth, polished egg-shaped stones usually made from jade or other semi-precious stones such as rose quartz. Many associate jade vaginal eggs with ancient China. However, no evidence was found to support the claim that yoni eggs were used in sexual health practices in ancient Chinese culture, according to a 2019 study published in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery newspaper.

Can jade eggs help improve sex life?

Yoni eggs are believed to potentially improve sex life in a number of ways. But note that these claims are largely anecdotal and there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of jade eggs for sexual health.

1. It can improve pelvic floor muscle strength

Regular use of jade eggs involves inserting them into the vagina and performing exercises to keep them in place. This practice is believed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to improved bladder control, increased vaginal tone and heightened sensations during sex, says obstetrician and gynecologist Dr Schumailla Bassi.

2. It can increase sensation

Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles with jade eggs can lead to increased sensations during sexual activity. Stronger pelvic floor muscles can lead to better blood flow to the genital area, potentially increasing arousal and improving orgasm intensity.

3. It can improve the mind-body connection

Engaging in practices such as jade egg exercises can help women become more in tune with their bodies. This can lead to greater awareness and enjoyment of sexual sensations.

4. It can boost libido

Regular use of yoni eggs can help balance and increase female energy. This can positively affect libido and sexual desire.

5. Self-exploration and self-confidence

Incorporating jade egg practices into a routine of self-care and sexual exploration can help women feel more connected to their bodies. They may feel more confident about their sexual experiences.

How to use jade eggs?

If you still want to use jade eggs, follow these steps:

  • Before each use, wash the jade egg thoroughly with warm water and mild soap.
  • Find a comfortable and private space where you can relax and focus on your practice.
  • Apply a small amount of water-based lubricant to the yoni egg and the opening of your vagina so that you can insert it easily.
  • Gently insert the egg into your vagina with the larger end first.
  • Take your time, but stop if you feel any discomfort.
  • Once the yoni egg is inserted, you can perform a variety of pelvic floor exercises to engage the muscles surrounding the vagina and pelvic floor. Common exercises include contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, gently pressing on the egg and holding it in place for a few seconds.
  • When you are ready to remove the jade egg, gently hold down with your pelvic floor muscles while pulling on the retrieval cord or using your fingers to grasp the egg and carefully slide it out.
  • After using it, clean the jade egg again with warm water and mild soap. After it dries, store it in a clean and dry place.

Some people may use jade eggs for pelvic floor exercises, others may incorporate them into meditation, mindfulness or self-care practices, says Dr. Bassi.

What are the side effects of using jade eggs?

Using jade eggs has potential health risks or side effects, especially if they are not used properly. Some of the potential dangers associated with jade eggs include:

1. Bacterial infections

Inserting objects into the vagina, including jade eggs, can introduce bacteria and increase the risk of vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections, the practice says. It is important to clean the jade egg thoroughly before and after each use to minimize the risk of contamination.

2. Abrasion or trauma

Inserting or removing jade eggs roughly or without proper lubrication can cause abrasions or tears in the delicate vaginal tissues. This can lead to discomfort, pain or possible injury. Jade materials can crack and break. Thus, if an uneven egg is used, it can cause injury during insertion or when it is inside the vagina. Using a very large or heavy jade egg can also increase the risk of trauma to the vaginal walls.

3. Straining of the pelvic floor muscles

Performing pelvic floor exercises with jade eggs without proper guidance or technique can lead to over straining or straining the pelvic floor muscles. This can cause discomfort, pain or worsen existing pelvic floor problems such as pelvic pain or pelvic organ prolapse.

4. Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Improper hygiene practices, such as failing to clean the jade egg adequately or leaving it in the vagina for extended periods, can increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by introducing bacteria into the urinary tract.

Use jade eggs carefully, educate yourself on proper hygiene and technique, and listen to your body to avoid potential health risks associated with yoni eggs.
