A new ground-breaking technology, jointly developed by UCL scientists, which simultaneously records and manipulates the activity of neurons deep within the brain could transform our understanding of neural circuits and neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. The device, known as Neuropixels Opto and researched in mice, it integrates two powerful but traditionally separate techniques – electrophysiology (the study of the electrical activity of living cells) and optogenetics (combining genetics and optics to control cells). They form a single detector, allowing unprecedented insight into how individual neurons in the brain work and interact. Posted on methods of nature, The…
Strength training is a fundamental part of my life. One of my greatest sources of happiness and satisfaction comes from lifting weights and seeing how I can improve my fitness and shape my body.Fueling these efforts is the real engine behind any exercise program: nutrition. I track my macros every day to make sure my gym work doesn’t go to waste. One question I get a lot is what exactly do I eat to hit those macros. So today I’m going to walk you through my diet: exactly what I eat every day, what its nutritional profile is like and what it…
Deciding to seek help for addiction treatment is a powerful step toward recovery. However, once this decision is made, many people face another question: what kind of treatment is the right choice? Some people wonder if they should enter one inpatient program and temporarily remove yourself from everyday life. Others may consider outpatient care, which allows them to continue working and caring for family while receiving treatment. The truth is that there is no universal answer. Both inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment can be effective. The key is choosing the level of care that best suits a person’s medical needs,…
An FDA-cleared smartwatch app detected nearly every tonic-clonic seizure in a Phase III trial while producing only one false alarm every 12 days, potentially addressing one of the biggest challenges in wearable epilepsy monitoring. Study: Phase III trial of EpiWatch for tonic-clonic seizure detection in children and adults. Image credit: VI-stock studio/Shutterstock.com A Phase III clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of the smartwatch-based EpiWatch app concluded that it could detect tonic-clonic seizures (TCS) relatively early and had a low false alarm rate (FAR). However, its real-world performance remains to be tested. The study was published in the journal Neurology Open…
Millions of people use a portable health and fitness tracker. These devices can be useful for monitoring activity levels, sleep quality and heart rate. But for some, wearables may have unintended consequences on well-being. This is something I came across recently. At a public speaking event, I spoke to a man who told me a story that stuck with me. He had just finished a long hike and felt great. Then he glanced at his smart watch. Heart rate: 130 bpm. Momentary panic. About 30 minutes later he realized the cause: the altitude. However, in that moment, it had gone…
I knew about New Dimensions long before I was invited to be interviewed about my new book, male menopause, published in 1997. Michael and Justine Toms founded New Dimensions Radio in 1973 and have recorded groundbreaking conversations with visionaries such as Joseph Campbell, HH the Dalai Lama, R. Buckminster Fuller, Ram Dass, Maya Angelou, Andrew Weil, Stewart Brand, Joanna Marbb and many others. Recently, I was lucky enough to interview Justine about how New Dimensions have evolved over the past fifty plus years and are working to bring back recordings that are in danger of being lost. I always ask…

Thyroid dysfunction is one of the most common endocrine conditions afflicting expectant women in India. Thyroid disorder significantly affects the course of pregnancy in several ways. From recent epidemiological data as well as some clinical studies, it has been observed that thyroid complications in pregnancy, especially hypothyroidism, in the Indian pregnant population are much higher than those in western countries. Because of the vital role that thyroid hormones play in fetal development, particularly neurodevelopment and maternal health, this condition has already become a top concern for the country’s public health and obstetrics services. Understanding Thyroid Dysfunction Thyroid disorder refers to…
A new machine learning approach to prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) could estimate radiation dose to tumors and healthy organs before starting treatment. Using data already available from pre-treatment PET/CT scans, this new predictive tool could help personalize treatment plans, improve patient selection and reduce the risk of toxicity. This research was presented at the 2026 Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Annual Meeting.Dosimetry is critical for optimizing 77Lu-PSMA radiopharmaceutical therapy in mCRPC. Currently, post-treatment imaging is commonly used to calculate dosimetry. However, it is time consuming and resource intensive. Pretreatment PET/CT offers…
By Christina Zamba, Human Rights Lawyer and Deputy Director of Global Advocacy at the Center for Reproductive Rights © Rolf Luginbuehl Barriers to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services have always existed, but the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to light the dark reality of these barriers. The general population around the world now experiences what many marginalized people, such as adolescents, people with disabilities, people living in rural and humanitarian settings, and members of LGBTIQ communities have experienced — limited or no access to SRH services. While people belonging to these groups bear the brunt of the stigma…
