We are taught in sex education that unprotected sex leads to pregnancy – from the beginning of the ‘birds and bees’ debate, it really is that simple. However, the reality that about 1 in 5 couples face when trying to conceive is that it’s not always as easy as your teacher might make it out to be. It’s an exciting time when you’re planning a family, but that excitement can turn to frustration, sadness, and even jealousy if pregnancy doesn’t happen right away. Whether you’re experiencing unexplained infertility or a medical condition has led to an infertility diagnosis, it’s rarely…
FODMAPs are a family of food ingredients that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and generally end up being fermented in the colon by our gut bacteria. Their ability to ferment positively contributes to the gut microbiome, but can also cause digestive distress in certain populations—which is why the strategic use of a low-FODMAP diet to determine specific sensitivity to these compounds is a primary management strategy for IBS. Prolonged or inappropriate use of low-FODMAP food or the need to avoid or minimize many different types of FODMAP-containing foods could negatively affect the gut microbiome. With that in mind,…
According to new research published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) https://www.cmaj.ca/lookup/doi/10.1503/cmaj.230682. All Nunavik residents are screened and treated for cancer at the McGill University Health Center (MUHC) in Montreal, more than 1400 kilometers away from Nunavik hospitals, due to limited resources in the region. The researchers compared lung cancer survival among 95 Nunavik residents and 185 Montreal residents treated at the MUHC. They found that Nunavik residents with similar stages of lung cancer had shorter survival than Montrealers, even after accounting for other differences between the groups. Analysis of the results with community representatives pointed to a chronic lack…
As you’ve no doubt seen on our website, one of my strongest passions is helping men regain their continence and erectile function after prostatectomy. I feel strongly about this, not only because there are men who suffer in silence for years or even decades, but also because the solutions to some of these issues are simple, clear, and surprisingly doable. Ultimately, any given prostatectomy patient may have a slower or faster recovery of these functions than a peer. But ultimately, every patient should be able to enjoy normal urination and erectile function, even if that means with the help of…

By analyzing millions of small genetic differences in a person’s genome, researchers can calculate a polygenic risk score to estimate someone’s chances of developing a particular disease in their lifetime. Over the past decade, scientists have developed these risk scores for dozens of diseases, including heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and cancer, with the hope that patients could someday use this information to reduce their increased risk of disease. However, determining whether such tests work effectively in all populations and how they can guide clinical decision making has been a challenge. Now, a team of researchers at the Broad Institute…

Top Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid in Pregnancy Retinoids Vitamin A is a critical nutrient required for optimal skin, immune, reproductive and eye health.
