Burnout is prompting emergency physicians to leave the specialty or reduce clinical hours, adding to the body of research suggesting a crisis in health care in Canada, according to a new study published in CMAJ (Journal of the Canadian Medical Association) . “The prevailing theme was that the health system is broken,” writes Dr. Kerstin de Wit, an emergency physician and thrombologist at Kingston Health Sciences Center and professor at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, with co-authors.”We found repeated reports in the emergency department covering the inadequacies of the system, with fewer resources and little support, and the expectation that the…
More Americans now hold absolutist positions, supporting legal access to abortion in all or most cases and opposing government regulation overall. Four years have passed since the Supreme Court decision Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wadeending the federal constitutional right to abortion. Immediately after the decision, national attention focused on its implementation state prohibitions and a changing legal landscape. One of the most important developments in recent years has been less visible: an important, lasting and politically consequential one changing public opinion. In its wake Dobbsthe abortion rights debate didn’t just return to the states. Change…
Gender reveals were once relatively simple affairs involving a colored cake, a box of balloons or a surprise announcement to the family. But as social media has increased the pressure to create ever more elaborate moments, some celebrations have ended with much more than pink or blue confetti. Gender reveal stunts have caused fires, explosions, injuries and even deaths. Fireworks have ignited thousands of acres, improvised explosive devices have sent debris flying, planes have crashed during planned revelations, and animals have been drawn into spectacles they cannot understand or consent to. Now, an Arizona family is facing criticism after using…
In 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued voluntary Phase I sodium reduction targets to encourage manufacturers to reduce the amount of sodium in packaged foods by 2024. The targets appear to have had little impact, according to a study comparing the sodium content of new products introduced before and after the guidance was issued. Our findings suggest that the sodium content of newly introduced products did not decrease in nine categories of packaged foods that contributed the majority of dietary sodium in the US, and actually increased in four categories, despite voluntary targets issued by the…
A 20-year study of more than 65,000 postmenopausal women found that higher adherence to the Planetary Health Diet was associated with a lower risk of total cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure. The findings showed that women whose diets followed the Planet Health Diet most closely had about a 28% lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to women in the group that scored the lowest for adherence. However, even moderate adherence to the diet was associated with a lower risk. The Planetary Health Diet emphasizes foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and unsaturated fats,…

From Mellara Gold What my two pregnancies taught me about strength, trust and listening Photo source: Victoria Dodge When I became pregnant with my first child, I had already taught yoga for several years. I assumed pregnancy would become just another chapter of my practice. Instead, it completely changed my understanding of yoga. Like many first-time mothers, I was full of excitement. But underneath that excitement I was experiencing something I rarely talked about. Fear. Not because someone had told me something was wrong. It didn’t exist. I just became deeply aware that I was responsible for this tiny life…

Prebiotic drinks have become more popular in recent years, with a wave of new products promising gut health benefits and low-calorie indulgence. According to a new analysis, however, many of these drinks contain relatively little prebiotic fiber and more sugar than their marketing claims suggest. Many products include nutrition and functionality claims that may overstate their nutritional quality. For example, some labels say “no added sugar,” yet the product may contain about 10 grams of total sugars from sources such as juice. This raises concerns that such claims may create a ‘health halo’, leading consumers to believe that the…
