Picture this: you’ve been gluten-free for two years. No bread, no pasta, no birthday cake (crying inside). Your gut is finally healing. Then swipe on some lipstick — and the mystery reignites. The culprit? Your “safe” beauty routine. Welcome to the wild world of hidden allergens in makeup. Buckle up.
Wait – can makeup really cause a reaction to gluten?
Short answer: yes. Longer answer: absolutely, especially with lip products. Lipstick, lip gloss and lip balm are the biggest parabolas because they end up in your mouth – repeatedly throughout the day. The National Celiac Awareness Foundation has been pointing this out for years: lipstick, mouthwash, and toothpaste can all cause reactions in people with celiac disease.
But it doesn’t stop at the lips. Eye creams, foundations, and serums applied near mucous membranes (eyes, mouth) can also introduce allergens into your system. Your skin isn’t a perfect barrier — and for people with damaged skin (hello, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis), that barrier is even more porous.
As a pharmacist and founder of EpiLynx, I developed our entire line after experiencing this firsthand. I have a gluten sensitivity and psoriatic arthritis — and I haven’t been able to find a single “clean” makeup brand that’s actually clean for my. So I made one.
The 14 allergens hiding in plain sight
The EU mandates the labeling of 14 main allergens in food. Beauty; No such luck. See what is usually hidden in conventional makeup:
| Ingredient on label | What it actually is | It is usually found in |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrolyzed wheat protein | Wheat derivative containing gluten | Mascaras, serums, hair products |
| Triticum vulgare oil (germ). | Wheat germ oil — contains gluten | foundation, lip balms, moisturizers |
| Avena sativa extract | Oat extract — not celiac safe for many | “Soothing” creams, sensitive skin lines |
| Prunus amygdalus dulcis oil | Sweet almond oil — top-9 allergen | Eye creams, body lotion, primer |
| Tocopherol / Tocopheryl Acetate | Vitamin E — often derived from wheat | Almost everything is marketed as “nutritional” |
| Macadamia integrifolia seed oil | Macadamia nut oil | Luxury serums, hair masks, lip products |
| Fragrance / Fragrance | Up to 200+ unknown chemicals | Any conventional beauty product |
| Carmine (CI 75470) | Crushed cochineal beetles — not vegan | Red lipsticks, blushes, eye shadows |
Notice “hydrolyzed wheat protein” on that list? It is a popular emollient in mascaras and serums. It makes your lashes look fuller. It also contains gluten. That’s exactly why every EpiLynx product is made free of the 14 most common allergens — not just gluten, not just tree nuts, all of them.
The worst offenders by product category
Mascara & eyeliner
Your eyes are right next to the mucous tissue. Mascaras often contain waxes derived from wheat for that volumizing effect, and many liquid eyeliners use hydrolyzed proteins as film formers. If you’ve ever had puffy, irritated eyes after wearing mascara—not from sleeping in it, but just from using it—allergens may be to blame.
Try instead: The Mega Volume Vegan Mascara — waterproof, allergen-free, with a handmade diamond case because your lashes deserve to feel special. Pair it with the Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Pen in matte and shimmer shades or go bold with the Shimmer & Shine Glitter Eyeliner.
Lip gloss & lipstick
This is the class that started it all for many celiacs. The average person consumes 4-9 pounds of lipstick in their lifetime (yes, really – this statistic lives rent-free in my druggist brain). If this lipstick contains wheat germ oil or vitamin E derived from wheat, you’re effectively microdosing gluten daily. The lip-to-gut pipeline is very real.
Try instead: Color-Changing Flower Lip Gloss — gluten-free, nut-free, vegan, and literally changes color based on your body temperature. Science AND Aesthetics. Or touch up the long-lasting Matte Lip Stain infused with coffee bean extract and olive oil for all-day color without the allergen burden. Want the lip wardrobe? The Lip Balm + Lipstick + Lip Gloss set has you covered.
Fund & tinted moisturizer
Foundations often contain oat extracts (marketed as “soothing”), almond oil (marketed as “nourishing”) and wheat germ (marketed as “anti-aging”). All great ingredients for people with no sensitivities. For the rest of us? A daily inflammatory hit dressed up as skin care.
Try instead: Tinted CC Moisturizer SPF 55 covers, hydrates and protects with mineral SPF — allergen free, white cast free. For full coverage, Matte Foundation SPF 30 comes in 16 shades and Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15 offers 25 buildable shades for every skin tone.
Eye creams and serums
The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your entire body — 0.5mm compared to 2mm elsewhere. Almond oil is one of the most popular eye cream ingredients in conventional skin care. It is also a top-9 allergen. Apply millimeters to the mucous membrane of your eye, twice a day. You do the math.
Try instead: Anti-Aging Peptide Eye Cream uses Argireline NP and Eyeseryl B – peptides that mimic the effects of Botox – with zero nut oils. Ultra Renewal Depuffing Eye Cream is another powerhouse for puffiness and dark circles. Under those eyes, use Vitamin C Glow Serum for radiance or EpiSilk Crystal Face Serum for peptide firming.
How to read a beauty label like a pharmacist
You shouldn’t need a chemistry degree to buy mascara. But until the beauty industry catches up with food labeling standards, here’s your cheat sheet:
- Triticum vulgare = wheat. Dot. If you see it anywhere near your face, put the product down.
- Avena sativa = oats. It is not safe for celiac disease topically for many people, even though it is marketed as gentle and soothing.
- Prunus amygdalus dulcis = sweet almond oil. A top-9 allergen hidden in almost every “luxury” skincare product.
- Tocopherol / Tocopheryl Acetate = Vitamin E. Sounds harmless, often comes from wheat.
- Fragrance / Fragrance = a black box of unknown chemicals that may contain hundreds of sensitizers.
- Hydrolyzed [any grain] protein = softener from seeds containing gluten.
Pro tip: when in doubt, Google the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) name plus the word “allergen”. Or just buy the EpiLynx and skip the work altogether.
Your complete allergen-free facial routine
Here’s a full routine — cleanser through lip color — using EpiLynx products. All are gluten-free, nut-free, vegan, cruelty-free and free of the 14 most common allergens. Dr. Leah approved, obviously.
Step 1 — Cleanse
Start with the gentle moisturizing facial cleanser with cucumber seed oil and aloe vera — sulfate-free, paraben-free, allergen-free. For dry or dull skin, swap your gentle facial scrub for biodegradable jojoba beads 2–3 times a week.
Step 2 — Serum
Apply Vitamin C Glow Serum to correct light and dark spots or Sunrise Nourishing & Firming Serum for a bright morning glow. Mature skin? Ageless Rejuvenate Face Serum is your best friend.
Step 3 – Eye cream
Gently pat the Anti-Aging Peptide Eye Cream under the eyes with your finger — never rub. It deflates, brightens and tightens with peptide technology that shows results in 7 days.
Step 4 – Hydration
For daily glow: Sunrise Nourishing & Firming Cream. For skin prone to redness or eczema: Miracle Face Cream with hemp seed oil. For mature skin that targets wrinkles: Lifting & Firming Face + Neck Cream with Apple Stem Cells.
Step 5 — SPF + coverage
Tinted CC Moisturizer SPF 55 does a triple action: hydrates, evens tone and protects with mineral SPF 55. For days of greater coverage, layer Matte Foundation SPF 30 on top.
Step 6 – Eyes
Your choice of Mega Volume Mascara + Eyeliner: Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner for clean lines or Shimmer Glitter Eyeliner when you want all eyes on you. Frame everything with the brow defining pencil.
Step 7 – Lips
Finish with Flower-Changing Lip Gloss and get ready to explain to everyone you meet why your lip color keeps changing. (The answer is science. And EpiLynx.)
Frequently asked questions
Can gluten in makeup cause the same intestinal damage as eating it?
For celiac disease, the scientific consensus is that gluten must be ingested to cause intestinal damage—and lip products absolutely count as ingestion. Skin reactions such as dermatitis herpetiformis are also a recognized form of celiac disease. For non-celiac gluten sensitivity, topical exposure can cause systemic inflammation in some people.
I have a nut allergy, not celiac disease. Is this relevant to me?
Too. Almond, macadamia, cashew and walnut oils are extremely common in premium skin care. “Natural” and “luxury” in beauty marketing too often means nut oil. Always check the INCI names or choose brands like EpiLynx that are nut-free across the board by design.
What about “unscented” vs “unscented” — is it the same?
No, and it travels people all the time. “Unscented” may still contain flavoring chemicals used to mask the smell of other ingredients. “Unscented” means that no aromatic compounds have been added. EpiLynx products are fragrance-free — not just fragrance-free.
How do I know EpiLynx is truly allergen free?
Each EpiLynx product is formulated by Dr. Liia, licensed pharmacist, with the full INCI ingredient list published on each product page. We are made free of gluten, all nuts, soy, flavors and animal by-products and tested against the 14 most common allergens. When in doubt, try the patch — and email us at inquiries@epilynx.com with any questions about the ingredients. Basically we answer.
Are EpiLynx products safe for children with allergies?
Many EpiLynx products are gentle enough for sensitive young skin. We also have a special Kids Skin collection specially designed for children’s sensitive skin.
The essence
Your beauty routine should make you feel good — not trigger the very reactions you’re trying so hard to avoid. The good news is that allergen-free beauty has come a long way. You no longer have to choose between safe ingredients and beautiful products.
EpiLynx was built by someone who experienced that frustration (hi, that’s me), for the millions of people who feel it every time they pick up a product at the drugstore and realize they can’t use it. Gluten free. No nuts. No nonsense.
