What did you investigate?

We explored how the language of our brain process during real life talks. Specifically, we wanted to understand which areas of the brain are becoming active when we speak and hear and how these standards are related to the specific words and the context of the discussion.

What methods did you use?

We used artificial intelligence (AI) to carefully consider how our brains handle our back and real conversations. We combined Advice AI, specific linguistic models such as those behind Chatgpt, with nerve records using electrodes positioned in the brain. This allowed us to follow the linguistic characteristics of talks at the same time and the corresponding nervous activity in different areas of the brain.

By analyzing these synchronized data flows, we could map how the specific aspects of language – such as words that speak and the interlocutor – were represented by the dynamic standards of brain activity during the conversation.

What did you find?

We found that both speech and listening during a conversation are involved in a widespread network of brain areas in frontal and time lobes. What is interesting is that these brain activity patterns are particularly specific, changing according to the exact words used, the context and order of these words.

We also noticed that some areas of the brain are active during both speech and listening, indicating a partially common neuronal basis for these processes. Finally, we identified specific shifts in brain activity that happens when people change from hearing by speaking during a conversation.

Overall, our findings illuminate the dynamic way our brains are organized to produce and understand the language during a conversation.

What are the consequences?

Our findings offer important knowledge of how the brain removes the seemingly effortless achievement of the conversation. It emphasizes how distributed and dynamic the nervous mechanism for the tongue – is not only a point that is illuminated, but a network in different areas of the brain. The fact that these patterns are so delicately tuned to the details of the words and the frame shows the brain’s remarkable ability to process the shades of tongue as it unfolds.

The partial coating we have seen between the areas of the brain involved in speech and listening to advice on an effective nervous system, possibly a common mechanism that is redefined depending on whether we send or receive information. This could tell us a lot about how to effectively change roles during a conversation.

What are the next steps?

The next step includes semantic decoding. This means moving beyond identifying the areas of the brain during the conversation and decoding the concept of words and concepts being processed.

After all, this level of decoding could provide deep knowledge of the neuronal representation of the language. This project could contribute to the development of communication technologies incorporated into the brain that can help people whose speech is influenced by neurodegenerative conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
