You’ve spent months figuring out your skincare routine. Then you put on foundation — and your skin is red and itchy by noon. Sound familiar? The problem is not your skin. It’s what’s in your makeup. Here’s how to find products that actually work with your immune system, not against it.
Why makeup is a hidden allergy trigger (even “natural” makeup)
The beauty industry has made huge strides toward “clean beauty” — but clean doesn’t mean allergen-free. Many natural and botanical ingredients are strong allergens. And the FDA doesn’t require cosmetics to follow the same allergen labeling rules as food.
Here are the most common makeup ingredients that cause reactions in sensitive and allergy-prone skin:
Fragrance / Fragrance
The fragrance is the No. 1 contact allergen in cosmeticsresponsible for the majority of allergic contact dermatitis reactions. “Fragrance” on a label can represent a mixture of hundreds of individual chemicals — and brands aren’t required to disclose which ones. Even “natural fragrance” derived from essential oils is a common trigger. If you have reactive skin, perfume is the first thing to eliminate.
Preservatives
Preservatives keep products from spoiling — but many are particularly sensitizing:
- Methylisothiazolinone (MI) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) — among the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis in the last decade
- Parabens — less allergenic than MI/MCI, but still causes reactions in some people
- Preservatives that release formaldehyde — Hydantoin DMDM, imidazolidinylurea
Gluten-derived ingredients in makeup
This surprises people the most. Many makeup formulas—especially foundation, mascara, and lip products—contain ingredients derived from wheat for their film-forming and conditioning properties:
- Hydrolyzed wheat protein (common in mascara for an eyelash extension effect)
- Tocopherol (Vitamin E) from wheat germ oil
- Triticum vulgare (wheat) starch — used as a finishing powder ingredient
For people with celiac disease or a wheat allergy, these are major concerns—especially in lip products that are swallowed during the day.
Carmine (Red Dye from Beetles)
Carmine (CI 75470) is a red pigment derived from cochineal beetles, used to create rich pink and red hues in blushes, lipsticks and eye shadows. It is a known allergen and also apparently not vegan. Allergen-free, vegan formulas use alternative pigments such as iron oxides.
Nickel and metal allergens
Eye shadow, eyeliner and some foundations contain metallic pigments that can cause allergic reactions to nickel – especially around the eyes. If you experience eyelid irritation or contact dermatitis, metallic pigments may be the culprit.
The non-negotiable rules for allergen-free makeup
As a pharmacist, here’s the typical EpiLynx makeup — and what I recommend looking for in any brand:
- No fragrance — without fragrance, perfumes or mixtures of essential oils for aromatic purposes
- Gluten free — without wheat, barley, rye or unverified oat derivatives in any form
- Top 8 without allergens — free of wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, dairy, eggs, shellfish and fish derivatives
- No harsh preservatives — no MI/MCI, no formaldehyde releasers, little or no parabens
- Vegan colorings — without carmine, without lanolin, without ingredients of animal origin
- Formulas that have been evaluated by a dermatologist or pharmacist — not just trend-tested
- Full ingredient transparency — every ingredient listed and explained

How to Read Makeup Labels for Hidden Allergens: A Quick Reference Guide
When you’re shopping for makeup and can’t find an EpiLynx product in a certain category, here’s how you can check any label:
Step 1: Search for fragrance first
Scan ingredients for: fragrance, fragrance, linalool, limonene, geraniol, citronellol, eugenol, cinnamal. If any of these appear, put them back. Even an allergenic fragrance is a problem for reactive skin.
Step 2: Check for gluten
Search for: hydrolyzed wheat protein, Triticum vulgare, Hordeum vulgare, Avena sativa, tocopherol (no non-wheat source noted), malt extract, Secale cereale. Are there any of these? Skip it if you have celiac disease or a wheat allergy.
Step 3: Check out the preservatives
Avoid: methylisothiazolinone (MI), methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI), DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea. These are among the most active preservatives in the industry.
Step 4: Check the dyes for allergens
For bright reds and pinks: check for carmine (CI 75470) if you want vegan or are concerned about allergens from insects. Iron oxides (CI 77489, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499) are the vegan, well-tolerated alternative.
Step 5: When in doubt, try the patch test
Apply a small amount to your inner wrist for 24-48 hours before applying to your face. Reactive skin can respond within hours to new ingredients.
2026 Makeup trends that work for sensitive skin
Good news: the biggest makeup trends of 2026 actually work in your favor if you have sensitive or allergy-prone skin:
Minimal “Skin-Like” coverage.
The heavy foundation era is over. 2026 is all about skin that looks rested, not filtered. Lighter coverage formulas mean fewer ingredients on your skin — which means less opportunity for reactions. This aligns perfectly with the philosophy of allergen-free formulation: do more with less.
Hybrid Skincare-Makeup
Tinted SPFs, serum foundations, and BB creams that offer active ingredients alongside coverage are all the rage — and EpiLynx’s approach has always been to treat makeup as a skincare opportunity, not just cosmetic. Our formulas work with your skin’s barrier, not against it.
Barrier-support formulas
Leading dermatologists and estheticians are calling for makeup that actively supports barrier health—including ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide in foundation and skin formulas. This is exactly the standard we are setting.

Frequently Asked Questions: Allergen-free makeup
What is allergen-free makeup?
Allergen-free makeup is formulated without the most common sensitizing and allergenic ingredients — including fragrances, common preservatives, wheat/gluten derivatives, and the FDA’s top 8 food allergens. It is designed for people with food allergies, celiac disease, eczema, rosacea or highly reactive skin.
Can makeup cause eczema or allergic reactions?
Yes. Makeup is one of the most common sources of contact allergens. Fragrance is the #1 contact allergen in cosmetics. Preservatives such as methylisothiazolinone (MI), parabens and formaldehyde releasers are also common triggers. Ingredients derived from wheat can cause reactions in people with celiac disease or a wheat allergy — especially in lip products that are swallowed. Switching to allergen-free formulas significantly reduces the risk of flare-ups.
Is vegan makeup better for sensitive skin?
Often, yes — but not automatically. Vegan makeup avoids ingredients like carmine (a common allergen). However, vegan does not automatically mean allergen-free or gluten-free. Look for makeup that is vegan AND allergen-free AND fragrance-free for the most skin-friendly formula.
What makeup is safe for celiac disease?
For celiac disease, gluten-free lip products (lipstick, lip balm, lip gloss) are the highest priority as they are ingested directly. Face makeup should also be gluten-free, especially if you touch your face and then eat without washing your hands. EpiLynx by Dr. Liia offers a full line of certified gluten-free, allergen-free makeup specifically designed for celiac disease and allergy-prone skin. Shop the collection →
