Men and body image: a closer look

When we talk about body image problems we often hear about how women are affected-But men also fightoften silently. In recent years, more men have been opening up for their experiences with self -esteem, body dissatisfaction and disturbed food. Still, for many men in Chicago and beyond, these struggles remain hidden under layers of social expectation and cultural silence.

As a men’s therapist in Chicago, I work with children from all social strata, professionals, traders, dads, athletes, students and body image more often than you think. Whether it’s pressure to be muscular, lean, or to show a specific way to cultivate fitness or in applications dating, the impact on a person’s mental health can be important.

In this post, we will explore why the body image is important to men, how social pressures contribute to the problem and what steps you can take to start treatment. If you are looking for Male body image counseling in ChicagoYou know you are not alone – and there is help.

The silent struggle: Why the body image also affects men

Men are often taught that their value is associated with performance, productivity, stoicism – not appearance. And yet, the cultural images of the “ideal man” are everywhere: abdominal chisel, wide shoulders, low body fat, perfect jawlines. From superhero films to Instagram influencers, this standard can create impossible expectations.

Although men may not speak it openly, research shows that Up to 40% of men They are unhappy with their bodies. For some, this leads to excessive training, restrictive diet or even steroid use. For others, it appears as anxiety, depression or social withdrawal – especially in places such as gyms, changing rooms or dating.

What makes this more difficult is that many men feel they do not have “permission” to fight with these feelings. It is not uncommon for a man to tell me at the Summit, “I feel that I should not care so much about how I see.” But the truth is that the image of the body is a human issue – not just an issue of women.

Chicago’s influence: the urban pressure and comparison trap

Life in a big city like Chicago brings unique pressure. Whether you walk through the river north, you work in the loop, or jogging along Lake Michigan, the pressure to “look at the place” may be real. Chicago’s gym culture – and often positive – can also enhance harmful comparisons.

For many men, the competitive labor market adds another mattress. Seeing appropriate and certain that sometimes perceives as a professional advantage. Social media only enhance this: endless animal feed from selfless selfies, filtered photos and “before and after” transformations can lead to unhealthy self -concentration.

In Guy’s Counseling in Chicago, we often hear that men say they feel “less than” because they do not look somehow. This comparison trap can be removed from self-esteem and enhance the belief that it is not good enough or otherwise.

Social messages that hurt men

Let’s break some common cultural messages that contribute to body image struggles for men:

“Real men are jacked.”
The muscular ideal promoted in gym magazines and action films often becomes a reference point. Men who do not naturally build muscles may feel insecure or pressed for excessive technology.

“Men should not care how they look.”
This message erases men to take care of appearance and creates silence around their struggles.

“Dad is okay – but only if you are successful.”
Even the positive -body messages for men often depend on the case. The idea that you can have a “dad”, but only if you are funny, rich or powerful still enhance is worth connecting to external validation.

These mixed messages create confusion and emotional isolation.
