Everyone says they want to shiny skin. But what does this actually mean?

As an esthetician, I hear this every day: “I want my skin to glow.” This word is constantly circulating on social media. But it is rarely defined. “Glow” has become shorthand for healthy, glowing, beautiful skin… without anyone really explaining how to achieve it.

After treating 25,000+ faces, I set the glow.

To me, glow is not glow with makeup. It’s not just applying an oil or heavy moisturizer. And it’s definitely not a greasy shine.

Here’s what it actually looks like:

  • Even skin tone: less visible redness, blemishes or dull patches.
  • Smooth texture: light is reflected evenly instead of catching on dry areas.
  • Balanced hydration: plump, not tight. fed, not slick.
  • Light-reflecting surface: A natural skin-like luminosity, not glitter.
  • Good circulation from within: A vitality that radiates from the skin itself

Glow occurs when skin is truly healthy looking, when light hits the skin and bounces off evenly. If the texture is rough, the tone is uneven, or the barrier is damaged, this reflection is disturbed.

Skin health first, glowing skin second

Before we talk about glow-enhancing products, we need to talk about skincare basics. Glow comes long before makeup.

It starts with:

  • Consistent cleaning to remove build-up that dulls the surface.
  • Gentle, regular exfoliation to lift dead cells that block light reflection.
  • Barrier support to keep skin calm, hydrated and supple.

This is why going for glowing skin without firming the texture first rarely works. You can layer on bright products, but if the foundation isn’t healthy, it won’t last. Once the skin is healthy, this is where we strengthen.

The Glow Toolkit: What I actually use on my own skin

Exfoliants

The texture is everything. When I want my skin to look instantly brighter, I look to exfoliation first. Removing dull surface build-up allows light to be reflected clearly and evenly. The key is consistency and gentleness versus over-exfoliating which can compromise the barrier. I like to use Triple Berry Smoothing Peel followed by Triple Berry Smoothing Scrub once a week followed by a mask. (Rest Day Masque in winter and Rapid Response Detox Mask in the summer.) This is my once-a-week home facial.

I am a Skin type #6 so be sure to get it Skin type quiz to receive my personalized recommendations just for you!

Hydration + Shine Treatments

Hydration gives skin that soft, lit-from-within quality. Shine ingredients help even tone over time. This is where I reach for targeted treatments, incl Bright Now Oil Serum.

I created Bright Now because I wanted a way to give skin an instant glow without relying on glitter or artificial shine.

It is an oil-serum hybrid purposely designed to:

  • Boost instant brightness
  • Support long-term brightness and visible fading of discoloration by targeting hyperpigmentation at the source
  • Improve the way skin naturally reflects light

The formula is lightweight and carefully balanced to deliver shine without feeling heavy or greasy. Instead of covering the skin, Bright Now works to actually enhance its natural light.

For a more targeted skin glow, HyperFix Fading Toner it also helps suppress melanin activity to visibly fade stubborn sun spots and breakouts.

Oils vs Oil Serums

Not all oils are created equal. Traditional facial oils can feel heavy or clogging. But one oil serum does not make the skin oily. It enhances glide, improves light reflection and helps seal in hydration so skin maintains that soft glow. In addition, it works like a treatment serum to deliver benefits from deep within the skin’s surface.

This is the difference between shimmer and shine.

Traffic is everything

Let’s touch on traffic. When you have good blood flow through the skin, the blood increases oxygen and brings new nutrients to the skin cells, giving you that inner glow. This is why I hang my head upside down for 2 minutes every night. And Energy boosting toner gives the same benefit! (This product is not recommended for those with redness and rosacea.)

Glow Enhancers: Makeup, Finishing and Technique

Some makeup textures enhance shine better than others. My very, very favorite make up foundation to use is Gee Beauty Prime Skin. It doesn’t settle into my lines, but it makes my skin glow and keeps my skin looking like skin, but better! And if you want me to tell you another secret, this is it Glow Tour by Dibs. I’ll put on a cream blush and put it on top. I get so many compliments!

The key is this: skin care first and makeup to boost.

Instant glow vs. long-term brightness

There are two types of glow:

  • Instant glow: what you see immediately after applying a radiance boosting serum or hydrating treatment.
  • Long-term brightness: that which develops over time as tone evens out and texture improves.

The bottom line: The sparkle is intentional

If you’re building your own glow toolbox, start with the products that support smooth texture, balanced hydration, and even tone. This is what creates real brilliance. The kind that looks lit from within, no filters required.

Bright Now Oil Serum delivers instant shine and long-lasting shine with continued use. And it’s my new favorite for anyone who wants it really shine. I know you will love it.
