08 Apr. Filling nutrients while in glp-1 weight loss medications

This post was funded by Jarrow formulas. All views are mine.

The use of GLP-1 fighters has been soaring in the US since 2022. Advertising and social media reports that weight loss medicines are everywhere. They usually have the extreme capabilities of weight loss of GLP-1s. According to data 2024, 1 in 8 American adults are estimated to have used a GLP-1 agonist, with 4 in 10 among adults diagnosed with diabetes.1 Even more shocking is that it is estimated that 18 million people will be in GLP-1 by 2029 only in the US. Global forecasts are estimated at 40 million people receiving GLP-1 by 2029 with 17.6 million people in the US2 If you choose to take a GLP-1 or be in one now, it is important to understand what is happening with your diet, especially with the extreme decline in appetite and drastically reduced food consumption. After all, what means you probably don’t get all the nutrients you only need from food and a supplement can be asked to help fill nutrients.

What are GLP-1 drugs?

Medications that look like 1 or GLP-1, developed about 20 years ago to help people with diabetes manage blood glucose levels, have also been found to promote significant weight loss. These drugs, which mimic the natural GLP-1 hormone, not only cause insulin release but also slow empty and reinforce feelings of fullness, leading to reduced calorie intake.

It is usually administered by injection to adipose tissue, GLP-1s can lead to a 10-20%weight loss, depending on the specific drug used. In addition to weight loss, they offer numerous health benefits, including lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart and kidney disease, and improvements in oily liver disease and diabetes -related kidney damage.

Management of common side effects

GLP-1 fighters can cause a series of side effects, including the strong loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, increased heart rate, headaches and indigestion. The most serious but less common risks include pancreatitis, acute kidney damage, retinopathy and thyroid cancer. Despite these challenges, people taking GLP-1 drugs for weight loss often adopt healthier diets3, consume more fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry, dairy products and meat, as the appetite decreases and gives priority to nutrient density. For the management of symptoms, it is recommended to eat small portions each time, incorporate foods rich and increase liquids.

Some of the main shortages of vitamin and minerals for people on GLP-1 drugs include:

  • Vitamin B-12
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin d

May need supplements

While food is the main method you want to nourish your body, this is not always possible for people in GLP-1 weight loss medicines that consume so little calories a day. The following supplements may be needed to support the necessary nutrient intake and should always be discussed with a health professional before taking.

1) polymemine

With your appetite and calorie consumption extremely low – and the slow -down intestine – a multivitamin is usually a good idea as they provide a steady supply of basic nutrients that cover nutritional gaps and support overall health. I suggest you Jarrow’s multivitamin line, Women’s Multi+, Multi Multi+ and Mood multi+, which provide 20 vitamins and minerals to 100% daily value in addition to more adapted health benefits for women and men.

2) Vitamin B-12

GLP-1s can interfere with the absorption of B12, which manifest as feelings of fatigue and low energy. In addition, B12 can only come through animals based on animals-if you do not consume enough meat and dairy products on a daily basis, this can lead to deficiency. Incorporating a B12 supplement into your diet can help support cell production and prevent deficiency. Methyl b12 & folk, that uses the methylated form of B12 and folic acid (B9) for better absorption to support cellular energy metabolism and cardiovascular health.*

3) calcium

This important bone health mineral is found in foods such as milk and dairy products, reinforced soy milk and yogurt, enhanced tofu, dark leafy greens and beans. However, guidelines for Americans 2020-20254 Determine calcium as a nutrient of concern. As people on GLP-1 drugs have limited appetite, they tend not to respond to daily calcium recommendations and are at risk of calcium deficiency. I suggest you Jarrow Formulas’ Shellfish Supplement as it uses the microcrystalline hydroxyapatite Intimucal â„¢, a naturally derived source of calcium that appears to support bone density better than calcium carbonate.*

4) Vitamin D

Vitamin D works with calcium to help maintain bone health – plus vitamin helps to regulate many other cellular functions in your body. This vitamin is another formally subjective nutrient as identified by dietary guidelines for Americans4. While you can get some vitamin D by exposing your skin to sunlight outdoors (without sunscreen), you should look for sources of vitamin D food, which are rather limited. Vitamin D food sources include egg yolks, garden liver oil and reinforced milk. A simple blood test can help you determine if you are insufficient and requires vitamin D-especially if you are in GLP-1 drugs.

5) Probiotics

Tummy Trouble is a possible side effect of GLP-1s, as the drug can affect your gut germicide and lead to digestive discomfort. In addition to consuming probiotics such as yogurt, text, krauts and kombucha, people in GLP-1 could benefit from taking a high quality probiotic supplement to maintain healthy bowel bacteria and improve digestion and absorption of nutrients. I like Jarrow ‘Jarro-Dophilus Eps Probiotic formulas because they are shaped by 8 clinically studied strains and an Enteroguard® coating that protects stomach acid strains and offers the best benefit to your gut.

Bottom Line:

Although GLP-1 medicines can help with weight loss, ensuring that you are getting good enough for nutrients to maintain healthy and maintain muscle mass is essential. Various supplements can help ensure the nutrient gaps that are filled during this period of weight loss.

Collaboration with a registered nutritionist (RDN) can help you browse nutritional habits while on GLP-1 medicines. Adopting a more rounded diet will not only ensure that you are right and relieve the side effects of GLP-1, but will also help you maintain your progress after stopping the drug. Always consult the healthcare provider to determine the best plan for you.
