Natural deodorant – one of those beautiful inventions of modern life that (thankfully) we can’t seem to live without. But not all natural deodorants are created equal. And with all the hype comes a lot of misconceptions.

So, let’s get a few things straight about sweating and natural deodorant, shall we?

Myth 1: Natural deodorant doesn’t work

The common locker room chatter? Natural deodorants cannot withstand heat. Time for a fact check: our bodies are designed to sweat as a way to regulate temperature and detoxify. Most antiperspirants use aluminum to clog your pores and try to stop the sweating process cold. Blocking sweat with aluminum is like plugging a volcano. It may seem calm on the surface, but underneath, it’s a hot mess. Toxins are trapped and your sweat glands start firing.

Woohoo Natural Deodorants, on the other hand, use a clever blend of plant-based ingredients (and zero aluminum) that work with your body’s natural chemistry to neutralize odors without blocking sweat. Think of it this way: instead of putting a stop sign on your sweat glands, we’re giving them the green light to do their job while making sure you don’t smell like you just ran a marathon in the Sahara. So while *some* natural deodorants may not work, Woohoo’s certainly do. And we have thousands of happy pits to prove it!

Myth 2: Sweat is the enemy

While sweating can often be as desirable as a hug from a cactus, it’s actually fantastic for you. In fact, without breaking a sweat, our ancestors might not have survived long enough to invent the wheel, let alone deodorant.

Sweating is a critical biological function for temperature control and toxin removal. When your body heats up, sweat glands speed up, producing sweat that cools your body as it evaporates. Additionally, sweating has been shown to help maintain healthy skin by keeping pores clear of bacteria, dirt, and oil. So the next time you’re sweating, give evolution a nod – it’s got your back.

Myth 3: But if I sweat, won’t I smell like I’m fighting a trash can?

Plot twist: sweat itself is as odorless as water. Yes, you read that right. The stench? This is the work of bacteria that live their best lives on your skin. These bacteria feed on the proteins and lipids in our sweat, producing the strong odors we associate with body odor. Great, right?

While most traditional antiperspirants address this problem by doubling up with very strong antibacterials (killing good AND bad bacteria), natural deodorants take a different approach. They use ingredients that create an environment inhospitable to bacteria, cutting out BO while being kinder to your skin’s microbiome.

Myth 4: Natural deodorants will leave you feeling wet and uncomfortable

You swapped your antiperspirant for a natural deodorant and now you’re worried you’ll feel like you’re harboring a mini-swamp under your pits. The reality? Natural deodorants aren’t designed to block sweat (that’s a good thing, remember?), but that doesn’t mean you’re signing yourself up for a life of humidity.

Many natural formulas (like ours!) contain absorbent ingredients like needle powder, baking soda, or charcoal that help you feel dry without clogging your pores. So while you might notice a little more moisture (that’s your body thanking you for letting it do its thing), you’re not going to feel like you just took a dip in the pool.

Myth 5: If it’s natural, it must be soft

Ah, the old “natural equals kind” trope. While it’s true that natural deodorants ditch the harsh chemicals in favor of good Mother Nature ingredients, it’s worth noting that not every herbal ingredient will be a match made in heaven for every skin type.

For example, some people may find baking soda, a common ingredient in many natural deodorants, a little irritating.

The key? Pay attention to your body. If your pits are acting up, it might be time to try a different formula. Fortunately, we have two fragrances for sensitive skin, without baking soda – Mellow and Tango. Both are harsh on body odor but gentle on your skin.

As for our other formulas, we have used protective ingredients to reduce the irritation potential as low as possible. Super-nourishing shea butter and vitamin E help keep your pout in tip-top shape while eliminating body odor.

Myth 6: Switching to natural deodorant is easy

Let’s set the record straight: switching to natural deodorant can be a bit like switching from coffee to tea. It’s a good move, but for 1 in 2 people, your body may need some time to adjust. When you ditch the antiperspirants, your pores are suddenly free to do their thing after being blocked with aluminum salts for so long.

You may experience a brief period where you feel a little sweatier or smellier – known as the detox phase. But don’t sweat it! This is completely normal and temporary. Stick with it, and soon your body will adjust and you’ll wonder why you didn’t switch sooner. If you need a helping hand, we recommend using the Underarm Detox Mask to keep them moving smoothly.

Myth 7: All natural deodorants are created equal

Just like snowflakes, no two natural deodorants are exactly alike. The effectiveness of a natural deodorant can vary greatly depending on its formulation, active ingredients, and—yes—your own unique body chemistry.

For example, the best-selling extra power option, Wild, is the best choice for so many. But there are others who may find Wild not effective for them, but Urban (a regular strength option with a different blend of essential oils) is their holy grail. Finding your perfect match may take some experimentation, but discovering a deodorant that works in harmony with your body’s natural rhythm is worth it.
