Could a vaccine you probably have already protected from gonorrhea?

There are possible good news in the prevention of gonorrhea. A Curriculum It suggests that some B vaccines B (MENB) can reduce the risk of gonorrhea. As a result, public health experts in England decided to offer the vaccine to people more likely to be exposed to gonorrhea.

In the United States, gonorrhea is the second most common bacterial Sti. There were over 600,000 cases of gonorrhea diagnosed in this country in 2023. Because so many cases of gonorrhea have no symptoms, many people are never tested. This means that there are many more annual cases. In fact, the CDC estimates that there is actually a 1.6 million case each year.

Preventing gonorrhea

We have been able to cure gonorrhea for almost 100 years, but we are exhausting the drugs. The gonorrhea -causing bacterium has changed steadily to avoid entire classes of antibiotics. Already in the 1940s, these bacteria were resistant to sulfanilamides. Until the 1980s they were resistant to penicillins and tetracyclines. In 2007, the CDC stopped to recommend fluoroquinolones. This leaves cephalosporins as the only effective treatment. This makes prevention even more important.

We already have some effective prevention tools. Conditions prevent the exchange of sperm secretions and cervix which is how the bacteria spread. The Doxy Pep includes taking an oral antibiotic after sexual sex to prevent STDs. It has been found to be about 50% effective against gonorrhea and 80% effective against chlamydia and syphilis.

There is no gonorrhea vaccine caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. But there is a vaccine against meningococcal meningitis caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. These bacteria are genetically similar. Scientists have studied whether B vaccines B (MENB) provide any gonorrhea protection. Two new reviews of the survey show that they are doing.

New research in an existing vaccine

These revisions – organized by researchers in Hungary and Greece – brought that the incidence of gonorrhea was lower in people who received the 4cmenb vaccine than in people who had not been vaccinated or received other meningococcal vaccines.

One of the components of the vaccine is called omv or outer membrane vesicles. OMV is naturally released by the type of bacteria that cause meningococcal meningitis and gonorrhea. OMV mimics the exterior of the bacteria and looks like a pathogen, but they do not live so that they cannot cause illness. This makes them an effective vaccine delivery system.

Hungarian researchers Seven studies were analyzedsix of which studied the 4cmenb vaccine. They found a concentrated vaccine efficiency (VE) 38% against gonorrhea infection. The concentrated VE increased slightly – to 41% – when they only looked at 4cmenb vaccine studies.

Similarly, researchers in Greece Nine studies were analyzedEight of which they studied the 4cmenb vaccine. Found a concentrated VE 30% against gonorrhea. They concluded: “While it is necessary randomized clinical trials, the findings of this systematic review and post-analysis underline the possible efficacy of OMV-based vaccines in terms of gonorrhea prevention.”

A new attempt to prevent gonorrhea in England

Based on these studies, the National Health Service of England (NHS) has announced plans to offer vaccines for people at high risk of gonorrhea. The NHS suggests the vaccine mainly for men who have sexual intercourse with men who have many partners or recently have Sti. The MENB vaccine is usually recommended for teenagers 16 to 18, so for some men this will be a amplifier. Others may not have taken the plan or may have received a different version of the MENB vaccine. The 4cmenb vaccine was not approved by 2015, so some of them may be based on age.

“Starting a global gonorrhea routine vaccination is a huge step forward for sexual health and will be critical to protecting individuals, helping to prevent infection spreading and reducing increasing rates of resistance to antibiotics.”

Dr. Amanda Doyle, National Manager of Primary Care and Community Services at NHS

What about the United States?

There is no plan for MSM vaccination yet in the United States. However, people who believe they are in danger of getting gonorrhea may want to talk to the healthcare provider. They should ask if they have taken the 4cmenb vaccine in the past and if their provider would propose an amplifier.

Meanwhile, condoms and doxy PEP can help prevent gonorrhea spread. It is also important to try regularly for gonorrhea, because this infection often has no symptoms. The faster one finds that they have gonorrhea, the faster they can deal with it. This can stop them from spreading it to partners and developing long -term health issues. Treatment is prevention.
