Today, Tropic is one of the UK’s fastest growing beauty brands. But it all started 22 years ago with a homemade body scrub and a 15-year-old Susie who just wanted to help her mom pay the bills.

The Story Of Body Smooth

Susie grew up in Australia, where mosquito bites were a part of life. Her grandmother, a pharmacist and toxicologist by trade, had the answer: a homemade body scrub made with lemon myrtle as the hero ingredient. Native to Australian rainforests and a natural insect repellent, it kept mosquitoes at bay while softening Susie’s skin. It’s also what gives Body Smooth its incredible signature scent.

When Susie moved to London with her mum, she brought her grandmother’s recipe with her. Times were tough and Susie wanted to help. So, at 15, she set out to recreate her favorite body scrub. Using the kitchen table as a makeshift factory, Susie mixed the first batch of Body Smooth by hand, poured it into 50 recycled jam jars, and Preet stuck the labels on them.

He then took the jars to Greenwich Market and offered them to customers for free hand rubs so they can feel for themselves how soft the scrub left their skin.

Susie sold every jar on the first day and Body Smooth became Tropic’s founding product.

What makes the body smooth different?

Most body scrubs do one thing: they exfoliate. Body Smooth does two.

It’s a body polish, meaning it’s designed to exfoliate and nourish at the same time. Mineral-rich sea salts, magnesium salts and coconut fiber work together to exfoliate rough, dry skin. Then, as you wash off, the salts wash away, but the botanical oils stay put, leaving your skin silky smooth rather than tight or stripped.

Golden Jojoba Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil and Australian Lemon Myrtle Ingredients found in Body Smooth.

What’s inside?

Golden Jojoba Oil
Light yet deeply moisturizing, jojoba oil is a liquid wax with a remarkably similar structure to our skin’s natural oils. It absorbs beautifully, helping to retain moisture and leaving skin supple, soft and comfortable after exfoliation.

Macadamia nut oil
Rich in moisturizing fatty acids, macadamia oil helps condition and soften the skin. It also naturally contains oleic acid and palmitoleic acid, which support skin cell repair.

Australian Lemon Myrtle
Native to Australia, lemon myrtle brings to life the refreshing tropical scent of Body Smooth. Blended with bergamot and lime essential oils, it creates a refreshing aesthetic experience while helping to balance the skin’s natural oils.

Why is it great?

Body Smooth is especially good for:

  • Working hands and rough joints
  • Dry elbows, knees and feet
  • Prep the skin before self-tan (use about 24 hours before for the most even finish)
  • Smoothing the skin before shaving

How to enjoy it

Step 1: Polishing
Remove Body Scoop Smooth from the jar and massage into dry skin, paying particular attention to any rough or dry areas such as your elbows, knees, heels and soles of your feet. We recommend doing this in the shower to keep things smooth.

Step 2: Rinse
Rinse off the sea salts with warm water in the shower or bath, then massage the remaining oils into your skin. This is the part that people always notice.

Step 3: Nutrition
Follow with your favorite body moisturizer or Luxury Body Oil for an extra boost of hydration. For something light, try Body Love Firming Buttercream. For a richer finish, Whipped Body Velvet is it.

Step 4: Protection
If you’re going outdoors, finish with a broad-spectrum SPF. Freshly exfoliated skin needs a little extra sun protection.

Use it once or twice a week to maintain wonderfully smooth and soft skin.

Frequently asked questions

What does a body scrub do?
It removes the build-up of dead skin cells from the surface, leaving skin smoother and softer and helping your moisturizer to absorb more effectively.

Is body scrub the same as body exfoliator?
A body scrub is a type of exfoliator. Body Smooth goes a step further by combining exfoliating sea salts with nourishing botanical oils, so it polishes and conditions in one step.

How often should I use it?
Once or twice a week is ideal for most people.

Can it help with dry skin?
Yes. Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells that can make skin feel rough or dull. Following with a body oil or moisturizer helps lock in that smoothness.

Should I exfoliate before shaving or tan?
Yes to both. Before shaving, it creates a smoother surface for a tighter result. Before self-tan, use Body Smooth about 24 hours before application for a more even finish.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Body Smooth is made with nourishing botanical oils and sea salts. If you have particularly sensitive skin, we would recommend patch testing before use.

Should I wear SPF after exfoliating?
If you spend time outdoors, yes. Broad spectrum SPF is a good post-exfoliation habit.

Can I use Body Smooth all year round?
Absolutely. It works just as well on dry winter skin as it does for summer prep.
