The growing use of electric bikes and scooters has caused an increase in brain and spinal injuries among cyclists and pedestrians, according to a new study. Led by NYU Langone Health researchers, the study found that these injuries now make up nearly 7 percent of trauma patients admitted to a New York City hospital. Published online April 15 at Neurosurgerya publication of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the paper analyzed 914 patients treated for injuries associated with both pedal-powered and powered micromobility devices at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue over five years. The research team found that one-third of the patients…
Bones are living tissue. They are constantly being torn down and rebuilt throughout our lives. But for many women, especially after menopause, that balance changes. Bone breaks down faster than the body can rebuild it.Over time, bones become weaker and more brittle, a condition called osteoporosis, which increases the risk of fractures in the spine, hips and wrists. A less severe stage called osteopenia means that the bone density is already lower than normal and can develop into osteoporosis if nothing is changed.Osteoporosis is extremely common. More than 10 million adults in the United States have the condition, and approx…
The world of skin care is big. Thousands of brands, endless opinions and enough conflicting advice to make your head spin faster than a toddler after a birthday cake. In the latest episode of my podcast B*tch, Listen, I reflected on a problem I can’t stop thinking about: Online progressives have created the most informed progressive audience in US history, and it hasn’t translated into any form of power or institutional change. Not even close. Anyone can explain anything to anyone now. This is new. Twenty years ago, if you wanted to understand how the Fed reshaped the federal judiciary to align with a Christofascist agenda, you needed a law degree or to browse a very specific corner of the Internet. But now we are one nation content creators…
It’s time for our first sweet harvests of the season – rhubarb is here and strawberries aren’t far behind. I get really excited when I see new seasonal products on the market and whether I have a plan or not, I buy them. So I ended up with four giant stalks of rhubarb in my fridge. I originally intended to make a crumble, but it didn’t happen. I had rhubarb sitting loose in my fridge, so I decided to turn this spicy, sour stalk, often found in the back lanes of Canada, into something sweet, smooth and delicious. Something you…
I wish I had someone sit me down when I first started in this industry to explain programming better. On the one hand, I guess it turned out to be a good thing, because I’ve written a million kajillion programs over the course of my career, and there’s really no better way to gain expertise in a subject than to actually do it.There is no choice but to become good at it.(I’ll save my obvious self-deprecation about not having girlfriends in high school here)That being said, it would have saved me a lot of time and I could second guess…
