I have spent years of my career teaching people how to prioritize their pleasure in the bedroom. And surprisingly, we often forget one of the most important parts of this space: the mattress. Understanding how your mattress affects your sex life is a fundamental part of improving your pleasure and well-being. If your body doesn’t recover, your libido just isn’t going to show up.

Think about it: we optimize our diet, our workouts and our skincare, but then we spend eight hours a night on a surface we’ve never challenged. If you want to understand why your libido may be lagging or why you feel disconnected from your partner, you need to see what you’re lying about.

Here are 7 ways the wrong mattress is negatively affecting your sex life:

1. Decreases REM sleep

Mental health is a health of intimacy. Most of our emotional processing happens during REM sleep. If your mattress is causing you to toss and turn, you’ll likely miss this crucial stage. When you’re deprived of REM, you’re more likely to be irritable, anxious, and less patient with your partner. More REM sleep equals more emotional availability and a greater capacity for deep connection.

2. It disrupts your deep sleep

Real physical recovery happens in Deep Sleep. This is the “maintenance” phase where your body regulates hormones like testosterone and growth hormones, both of which are the literal fuel for your libido. If your sleep environment does not allow you to stay in deep sleep, your hormonal “machine” will not be primed for desire.

3. Limits blood flow and sensitivity

Sex is about circulation. Many traditional mattresses create pressure points that can actually block blood flow while you sleep. Properly oxygenating your cells throughout the night translates into better physical performance, higher energy levels, and increased sensitivity throughout the day (and night).

4. Causes overheating and irritability

It’s hard to feel refreshed when you wake up in a pool of sweat. Most synthetic foam layers trap body heat, keeping your core temperature high and your nervous system in turmoil. When your body can’t regulate its temperature properly, you remain in a low-quality stress response rather than a state of relaxation.

5. Creates a ‘Quicksand’ effect.

We’ve all tried to be intimate in a sink-like mattress. Traditional memory foam often has a “sticky” effect that makes it difficult to easily move or change positions. An unresponsive mattress restricts your mobility and makes the physical aspect of sex seem like a chore instead of a flow.

6. Keeps Your Nervous System “Wired”

To get in the mood, your body needs to switch from fight-or-flight mode to a relaxed, parasympathetic state. Our bedrooms are often filled with electronic interference that keeps our nervous system on high alert. Without proper protection from interference, your body struggles to fully fall into this relaxed state, which is the necessary “green light” your body needs for sexual arousal.

7. Causes physical aches and pains

It’s almost impossible to enjoy sex if you have nagging back pain or a stiff neck from a loose mattress. Poor postural support ensures that your muscles remain tight rather than relaxed. When you wake up in pain, you are much less physically available for intimacy.

It’s time to have higher standards for the surface you sleep on every night. It can make or break your mental, physical and sexual health. When your sleep is truly restorative, your nervous system resets and you feel more present, connected and available to your partner.

This is not a stretch. This is physiology.

And that’s exactly why I’m so excited to be working with Jack Dell’Accio, the founder of Essentia biological mattress. For over 20 years, Jack has researched the science of sleep to create a mattress that truly heals the body. It began as a goal to find a mattress that could truly support a loved one in a serious illness. When he couldn’t find a non-toxic, high-performance option, he built it himself.

Essentia Mattresses are created with organic materials and patented sleep technology that bring multiple sleep support benefits to a single mattress. Pressure relief. Temperature regulation. Reduced motion transfer. Cleaner, certified organic materials. An optional EMF protection basefor lower interference sleep environments. Not just a benefit. All of them at the same time.

Stop letting your mattress kill the mood. Your nervous system (and your partner) will thank you.

Meet your new performance layer from Essentia.
