People fast for a variety of reasons. Some people fast for religious reasons, for example Ramadan, while some fast for weight loss. I often wonder if fasting is a dangerous activity and the answer is no.

Once you can stick to the tips below, you’ll get through the fast without breaking a sweat. Whatever your reason, the following are things to do while fasting:

10 Healthy Things to Do While Fasting

Healthy things to do while fasting

1. Make sure you keep a short fasting period

It is not advisable to continue a dry fast for days as this is dangerous. It can also cause some serious problems with your immune system. Doctors and researchers have confirmed that fasting periods should not extend beyond a period of 8-24 hours.

Once this is exceeded, the person runs the risk of experiencing problems that have been associated with fasting. Possible symptoms include irritability, dehydration, fainting, excessive hunger in schools. Considering that people react to things differently, there would be various reactions to this.

2. Avoid overeating when you break your fast

Once the fast is over, some people tend to overeat. They believe this is to store food in their system for later while they are fasting. However, doing so will only make you tired during the day and increase your chances of bloat.

If weight loss is one of the main reasons behind your fast, then you should be aware of it. No matter how hungry you may think you feel, it’s best to just keep eating your normal portions.

3. Sleep

With the fact that there are different reactions to fasting, some people tend to feel exhausted while fasting. If you are also facing this, you should not avoid it. What you can do is just take a nap of at least 15 minutes. You can sleep longer if you feel tired.

A nap would help you get your system in order so you don’t end up sleeping while you’re busy at work.

4. Stay hydrated

You should drink more water during your short fasting period. If you avoid taking water for a long time, it may increase the chances of you having some side effects. These side effects include fainting, dehydration and dizziness.

Increasing your water intake helps you stay energized during your fasting period. There are other ways to stay more hydrated.

5. Avoid doing rigorous exercises

During fasting, it is not good to exert too much force on the body by exercising. This does not enhance the body’s ability but, sometimes, makes it weaker. Although you can do exercises like walking, housework, meditation and even yoga.

Doing these will give you a chance to relax your body. However, if the reason for exercising is because you feel stressed while fasting, you should rest.

6. Eat healthy

It is ideal that the food you eat before, after and during your fast is a balanced diet. In cases where you don’t eat healthy meals before your fast, you feel sluggish throughout the day. This can affect you negatively.

Eating healthy within the three time periods helps improve your health status. It also prevents you from feeling sick during your fast.

7. Avoid the hot sun

Health experts advise that people who are fasting should not go out and spend many hours unnecessarily under the sun during the day. This will help prevent heat exhaustion. If it is necessary to go outside, you should cover your head with a hat or cloth and try to avoid exposure to sunlight as much as possible.

8. Stop fasting if you feel sick

This is one of the healthy things to do while fasting. It is normal to feel tired, hungry and irritable while fasting, but you should not feel sick. Some symptoms that indicate you should stop fasting include dizziness, loss of consciousness, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, and chest pain or stomach pain.

9. Take supplements

When you fast, you miss out on essential nutrients, which makes it harder for your body to meet its nutritional needs. Thus, those who are fasting should consider taking nutritional supplements and multivitamins that will nourish the body with nutrients.

10. Keep yourself busy with beneficial activities

It can be excruciating to fast, especially if you feel bored and hungry. However, avoid inadvertently breaking your fast by doing healthy activities while fasting. For example, you can read a book, take a walk, meditate, spend time with nature, write or listen to a podcast. There are so many other healthy things you can do when you’re bored.
