Are you familiar with mindful eating? Did you know that there are a number of formal studies looking at the heart health-related outcomes of mindful eating programs? What does the evidence show? Read on and we’ll look at it, after a quick look at what exactly we mean when we say mindful eating. What is mindful eating? Mindful eating is simply the practice of really paying attention to the experience of eating, physically and emotionally, without judgement. It’s pretty much the opposite of the multitasking, inhale-it-on-the-go, I-just-noticed-the-taste style that so many of us often eat. (including myself!) Mindful eating is…
Eating saturated fat and the effects it can have on your overall health — especially heart disease — has become a controversial topic. It was once labeled as the worst kind of fat, but trans fats have since inherited that role. So what’s up with saturated fat? Here’s what we know: Replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat can provide health benefits. Current research supports that saturated fat is better for us than trans fat. In the world of dietary fat, saturated fat sticks in the middle. So how does it fit into a healthy diet? What is saturated fat? With…
In women living with HIV, preventive treatment with DHA-PPQ is a safe and effective strategy to prevent malaria during pregnancy, according to final results of MAMAH, a clinical trial funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) and coordinated by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), an institution supported by the “la Caixa” Foundation. The study, published in Lancet Infectious Diseasescould help protect the health of the estimated one million pregnant women who are dually infected with malaria and HIV each year. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to malaria infection. Hence the recommendation to provide preventive…
How often do you try to convince people and convey your ideas to others? For students working on essays or professionals participating in a debate, it is a regular activity. They know the principles of argumentative writing inside and out and use them. For others, these principles can become an effective practice for boosting self-confidence. I have done academic research on this topic which you can see here:Men’s internal struggle to access treatmentMy research was born out of my experience counseling men over many years, yet similar statements are repeated today. I often heard, “I wanted to be able to do it myself, but in the end I couldn’t.” “I didn’t tell my friends because I was worried about what they would think of me.” “I wanted to express my feelings but it felt like a weakness.” “I wasn’t sure what I was feeling, I just knew something was wrong.” “I felt like I shouldn’t…
Wendy Ouriel If I had to describe my diet in one word, it would be “utilitarian.” I eat to live and I don’t live to eat. If I could take a pill that provided all the nutritional requirements for a day, I would because I find eating and dieting to be more of an annoying obligation to stay alive than a pleasure to indulge in. It is something that interferes with the day instead of decorating it. I consider the utilitarian approach to food to be probably one of the healthiest aspects of my personality. I’m not someone who makes…
Fun fact: when we first started HANX, co-founder Dr Sarah Welsh introduced herself as “the girl who looks at sinuses all day”. Professionally speaking, she’s really seen it all when it comes to front legs, thanks to her many years working in NHS gynecology and obstetrics – which comes in very handy when it comes to getting real about big subjects. This Cervical Cancer Awareness Week focuses on increasing awareness and acceptance of cervical screening, with 1 in 3 people with sinusitis do not attend a smear test (also known as a Pap smear in the US) when asked to…
After having a baby, it’s normal to be eager to regain strength and tone in your midsection or core. In this post, I’ll share some of my favorite poses to help you do just that by gradually adding more yoga to your life. (The benefits of postpartum or postpartum yoga extend WAY beyond core strength – both for the new mom and the caring family!). My story I remember after my first birth, I was so amazed that I struggled with simple things like getting out of the back seat of my car after putting my baby in his seat.…
Puree pouches are super convenient, contain fruits and vegetables, and most importantly, kids love them, but are they really a healthy option for your baby? They may look just as healthy as homemade, but unfortunately they are not… even with “organic” on the label. How are they made? The first step in making store-bought puree is in a mass producer where fruits and vegetables are boiled using ultra-high heat processing to create a shelf-stable pulp. This pulp is then sent to various baby food manufacturers who combine them in their own way and then boil them again with a second round of…
