The cerebellum plays a critical role in both motor and non-motor functions, and its dysfunction is linked to various mental disorders, including autism. This study maps the 3D distributions of 50,168 target neurons of cerebellar nuclei (CN) in wild-type and Nlgn3R451C mutant mice. The researchers found that Nlgn3R451C the mutation differentially affects projections from the CN to the thalamus, midbrain, and brainstem. Specifically, the mutation alters the innervation strength of the CN→zona incerta (ZI) pathway. Chemogenetic inhibition of a neuronal subpopulation in the ZI that receives inputs from the CN rescues social deficits in Nlgn3R451C mice. These findings highlight the…

New study identifies ‘chain breaking’ of insulin as it passes through the bloodstream as a game changer in understanding and treating diabetes and insulin resistance. Study: Insulin chain cleavage: an underlying mechanism of insulin resistance? Image credit: Nastasiiaa / Shutterstock In a recent study published in the journal NPJ Metabolic Health and Diseaseresearchers hypothesize that degradation of endogenously secreted insulin (as opposed to commonly believed defects in insulin receptor signaling) is the mechanism underlying insulin resistance in humans. The hypothesis posits that thiol-mediated “chain scission,” which is dependent on the redox potential of the surrounding plasma, occurs when human insulin…

For people suffering from a condition that affects their sexual function, an accurate diagnosis is an important first step in the process of continuing treatment. Stuttering priapism (SP) and sleep-related painful erection (SRPE) are two rare disorders that have similar symptoms and can cause painful erections at night, but they are separate conditions that need to be treated and treated in different ways. A team of researchers including David Ralph, MS, FRCS,…

Studio Ghibli is the Japanese equivalent of Disney, with Hayao Miyazaki as Japan’s Walt: the studio has won several Academy Awards for its beautifully hand-drawn animated films, and Miyazaki has achieved legendary status for creating these films for the past 40+ years. Luckily, the amazing community at Threads gave me hundreds of supportive…

Digital healthcare consultations are not enough to safely assess tonsillitis, according to a study from the University of Gothenburg. Reliability will not be sufficient, thus increasing the risk of over- or under-treating a sore throat. Tonsillitis is a common reason for doctor visits and antibiotic prescriptions in primary care. To determine whether a patient needs antibiotics, doctors use the so-called Centor Criteria for tonsillitis.
