Deciding to become a health coach is a significant investment of your time, energy and financial resources. It is important that the training you receive truly prepares you for the realities of work. Whether you’re looking for health coaching jobs in a clinical setting or planning to start a private practice, the quality of your education matters.

To help you navigate this landscape, we’ve outlined the key questions to ask before committing to a health coaching program.

Is the Program Accredited and Nationally Recognized?

Credibility is the currency of the wellness world. When looking for a health coaching certification, your first step should be to verify the program’s accreditation. Accreditation ensures that the curriculum meets rigorous professional standards and is not just a collection of opinions.

If you have ambitions to reach the highest level of the profession, you should ask if the program is approved by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC). Becoming a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) is often considered the gold standard.

Beyond NBHWC, look for partnerships with organizations such as American Naturopathic Medical Accreditation Board (ANMAB) and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). Choosing a program with reliable credentials ensures that your certificate will be respected by both employers and your peers.

What is the Special Field of Study Program?

What training are you doing? need become a health coach? Well, the answer depends on exactly what you want to do. Some programs focus strictly on behavior change, while others take a more holistic health coaching approach.

Here’s something to always look for, though: a strong curriculum should cover both “hard” and “soft” skills. You need to understand the science of nutrition and the mechanics of the human body, but you also need to master health coaching skills like motivational interviewing, active listening, and habit building.

Before signing up, ask for a detailed analysis of the module. The program covers:

  • Evidence-based nutrition science?
  • Behavior change theories and models?
  • Ethical and legal professional practice?
  • How to structure coaching sessions and programs?

This “whole person” focus ensures that you don’t see just one part of health and wellness as a silo.

What is the total cost and value of a Health Coach certification?

Fiscal transparency is vital. When evaluating health coach certification costs, look beyond the initial tuition. Some programs have hidden fees for textbooks, exam proctoring, or mandatory “extra” labs.

Consider the “bundle” price. For example, some health coaching schools offer a health coaching certificate as a standalone, while others, such as AFPA, offer a holistic health coaching certification that combines nutrition and wellness coaching for a single price.

Ask yourself:

  1. Are all digital materials included?
  2. Are there payment plans or financing options available?
  3. Does the cost include access to a community or career resources?

How long does a Health Coaching certification take?

Time commitment is a major factor for most students, many of whom balance studies with full-time jobs and/or family. Typically, a comprehensive online health coaching certification program can take anywhere from three months to a year.

There are other factors that will affect the time it takes to complete your Health coaching certification, including whether the program is strictly self-regulated or has a live component.

The “Live” requirement: Why format matters

If you are considering a program leading to board certification, you must consider a “live” requirement. For NBHWC, there are always at least 40 hours of live class meetings. Regardless of how much of the curriculum is available online, those 40 hours must be synchronous (real-time) to ensure you practice and get immediate feedback.

You will generally find two ways to fulfill these live hours:

  • Personal training: Some students prefer the traditional classroom environment, enjoying the physical presence of instructors and peers. However, this requires frequent travel and a more rigid schedule that depends on the location.
  • Live Online Training: Many students today opt for the convenience of live virtual classrooms. This format allows you to meet the NBHWC requirement from the comfort of your own home while participating in real-time coaching sessions and interactive discussions. It offers the perfect middle ground: the flexibility of being at home with the professional rigor of a live cohort.

The AFPA 1-Week Intensive

For those looking to accelerate their journey, AFPA offers a 1-week intensive. This option is designed to help you block those key live times into a concentrated schedule, making it the perfect option for busy people who want to move quickly towards onboarding eligibility without delaying the process for several months.

Understanding your time commitment and being honest about your bandwidth will help you decide which plan fits your life. Whether you thrive on a steady, multi-month pace or prefer a high-energy week, make sure the program you choose aligns with your ultimate career goals.

Who are the trainers behind the material?

You wouldn’t (hopefully) learn surgery from someone who has never been in an operating room. Likewise, your health coaching education should be led by professionals who combine strong academic credentials with real-world coaching experience.

The depth and diversity of an educational team can significantly shape the quality of your learning.

Look for programs led by instructors with advanced credentials and consider the range of professional backgrounds represented. A diverse training team exposes you to multiple perspectives, client scenarios, and coaching approaches, helping you gain adaptive skills that you can confidently apply to diverse populations and career paths.

At AFPA, educational leadership is based on both academic rigor and real-world results. As Dr. Shana Walsh, AFPA Curriculum Director and leader behind the NBHWC-approved health coaching program, explains:

“At AFPA’s health coaching program, we have two main priorities: preparing our students to pass the NBHWC board exams and equipping them to become outstanding health coaches. These two priorities drive everything we do. When we see our graduates earn their national board credentials and launch successful careers, we know our model is working.

At AFPA, we believe the best measure of our success is when our students are successful. When our students graduate from our program, pass their national board exams, and embark on successful health coaching careers, we know we’ve done our job well. That’s why student success drives every decision we make, from the curriculum we design, the instructors we hire, the one-on-one support we provide and how we support our students after they graduate from our program.”

What kind of career support can I expect?

After all, you’re probably looking for this education to build a career. Worth asking:

How will this certificate program help me get a job?

A high-quality health coach program acts as a bridge between your passion and your salary. It should equip you with the business acumen to navigate health coaching positions in a variety of environments. When reviewing a program, look for a curriculum that includes business development support.

Whether you want to work at a large hospital system, a technology-driven digital health platform, or as an independent entrepreneur, look for a certification that can help you with benefits like a professional community, forms and documents, training on how to start a private practice (from legal issues to client acquisition), free guides, and more.

Finding the right fit for you

Choosing between different types of coaching certifications can be overwhelming, but by asking these targeted questions, you can cut through the marketing noise. Look for a program that aligns with your values, fits your schedule, and provides a clear path forward.

The AFPA difference: Why choose us?

At AFPA, we’ve spent over 30 years improving what it means to be a healthcare professional. Having trained more than 130,000 graduates worldwide, our approach to Health coaching is based on the belief that education should be accessible, science-based and deeply practical.
