Preparing for a baby is expensive, but you don’t have to pay full price for everything. I’ve researched and tested the best ways to get free baby products and samples – from registry welcome boxes to milk samples to insurance-covered breast pumps. Here are 18 legit places to get free baby gear with no frills.

Free baby registry welcome boxes

Retailers want you to sign up for them, so they offer welcome boxes filled with samples, full-size products, and coupons. These boxes are really worth getting – I’ve received all three major ones and they’re full of useful items you’d buy anyway.

Target Welcome Kit

Target sends a free welcome kit (valued over $100) right to your door when you create a baby registry. The kit includes full-size bottles, diaper samples, baby care products and valuable coupons.

Requirements:

  • Join Target Circle (Free)
  • Create a registry and add items
  • Make a $10+ purchase from your register
  • The kit is sent to your door within 24-48 hours of qualification

You’ll also receive a 15% completion discount on remaining registry items eight weeks prior to the closing date, valid for two purchases.

Amazon Baby Registry Welcome Box

Welcome Box to Amazon Baby Registry

Amazon Prime members can receive a free welcome box valued at $35 when they create a baby registry. My box included a muslin wedge, onesie, bottle, diaper samples and various baby care products – all full size or generous samples.

Requirements:

  • Active Amazon Prime subscription (required)
  • Create a baby registry and add 10 items from the checklist
  • $10+ in purchases from your registry (by you or donors)
  • Wait for purchases to ship before making a claim

Prime members also receive a 15% completion discount on remaining registry items.

babylist hello baby box

Babylist Hello Baby Box

The Babylist Hello Baby Box is consistently ranked as one of the best registry boxes available, worth $125. Previous boxes have included items from top brands such as Monica + Andy, Burt’s Bees, FridaBaby and Philips Avent.

Requirements:

  • Add at least 3 items from Babylist Shop and 3 from other stores
  • Make a minimum purchase of $30 from Babylist Shop
  • Pay $8.95 + tax for shipping (Alaska and Hawaii have additional charges)
  • Your due date must be within 9 months

While not technically “free” due to the shipping fee, the value far outweighs the cost.

Monthly Giveaways & Contests

Win a $500 Newton Baby Gift Card

I’m giving away a $500 Newton Baby gift card every month to Pregnant Chicken. They specialize in breathable, washable, and non-toxic sleep products for babies and toddlers, including their award-winning crib mattresses (original, essential, waterproof), a tub and bedside crib, travel cribs, and organic sheets.

What to expect: By entering, you will provide Newton with your email address. Even if you don’t win, they usually send out discount codes and offers (these mattresses are expensive, so any discount helps). A winner is chosen each month.

Breastfeeding and supplies covered by insurance

four popular breast pumps you can get through insurance

Free breast pump through Aeroflow

Under the Affordable Care Act, most health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support and equipment at no cost. This includes quality breast pumps, spare parts and, in some cases, postpartum compression garments and breastfeeding education.

Aeroflow breast pumps and similar durable medical equipment (DME) providers handle all paperwork with your insurance company, verify your coverage, contact your doctor for prescriptions if needed, and ship directly to you.

How it works:

  • Fill out an eligibility form with your insurance information
  • Aeroflow verifies your coverage (usually within 3-5 business days)
  • Choose from covered pump options (brands like Medela, Spectra, Willow, Elvie)
  • They file the claim and ship your pump

You can qualify anytime during pregnancy up to one year after giving birth. Some insurance plans require you to wait until closer to the expiration date to ship the pump, and not all plans fully cover every pump model—you may have to pay extra for upgraded features.

Enfamil Family Principles

Subscribe to Enfamil Family Beginnings to receive formula samples, coupons and rewards for formula purchases.

Schedule and Exchanges: The welcome box may take up to 2 months to arrive. You’ll get marketing emails and offers, but if you plan on using formula, the samples and coupons make it worth it. You can always unsubscribe later.

Similac StrongMoms

Get coupons and free formula samples by signing up for Similac StrongMoms. You can also join the Pampers Club at the same time through the same process.

What to expect: You will receive marketing emails, but nothing excessive. Samples allow you to try different types before committing to full-size purchases.

Diaper Rewards Programs

Pampers Club

Scan codes inside packages of Pampers diapers and wipes to earn points that can be redeemed for gift cards at Amazon, Target, Carter’s, Walmart and for Pampers coupons.

How it works: You must purchase Pampers products and track purchases through their app. Points expire if you are inactive for 12 months, so regular purchases are necessary to maintain your balance.

Huggies Rewards

Collect points on Huggies products and redeem them for gift cards at Starbucks, Target and Amazon. About $350 in Huggies purchases translates into a $10 gift card.

Requirements: Download the Fetch Rewards app to enter and track your points. Like Pampers Club, you need consistent purchases to make the program worthwhile.

Panos National Bank Network

If you or someone you know needs diapers, check to see if there is a diaper bank in your area through the National Diaper Bank Network member directory.

Restrictions: Not all areas have participating diaper banks and you must pick up the diapers in person. This is a genuine needs-based program for families experiencing financial hardship.

Free children’s books

Dolly Parton’s Fantasy Library

This incredible program sends free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five every month, regardless of family income. The books are age appropriate and the program operates in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and Ireland.

Since its inception in 1995, the program has given away over 270 million books. One in seven children under 5 in the US receives books through this program. Families can now choose between English-only books or a fully bilingual English/Spanish collection.

Availability: The program is not available everywhere – it depends on local funding and community partners. Check if your region is participating.

Other ways to find free baby items

Facebook Marketplace & Parenting Groups

Parents regularly share baby clothes, gear, strollers, high chairs and other items on Facebook Marketplace and in local gently used parenting groups. Many families want to help other parents or simply need the space.

Safety first:

New parents also share unused coupon codes in Facebook groups – these can add up to significant savings.

Free car seat checks

Contrary to popular belief, not all fire stations inspect car seat installations (most have stopped due to liability concerns). Instead, check the Safe Kids Coalition website for certified inspection stations and events in your area.

Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will check your installation, show you how to install it properly, and verify that your car seat hasn’t expired or been recalled – all for free.

Availability: Inspection stations are not available in all areas. Some locations offer appointments while others host periodic events.

Free free

Some sites offer “free” items such as car seat covers, baby slings, nursing covers, breast pads, stretch mark creams and belly bands. I recommend avoiding them for several reasons:

  • They are rarely transparent about what they do with your personal information
  • Product quality is often questionable (cheap materials, poor workmanship)
  • There is no clear business model – if they’re not selling something, they’re selling your data

Most legitimate retailers are upfront that they want your contact information to market their products. Websites that offer expensive items for “free” with no clear purpose should raise red flags.

Free baby products in Canada

Many US programs also operate in Canada. Here are the links for Canada:

How about you?

Have you found other great sources for free baby products? Or have feedback on the programs listed here? Leave a comment below. I update this list regularly based on parents’ experiences and want to make sure the information stays current and useful.
