HYROX returned to Johannesburg for the second time this year, welcoming many first-time attendees to the Johannesburg Exhibition Centre.

The event marked an important milestone as South Africa’s first two-day HYROX event in townattracting thousands of athletes from across the region to compete in one of the world’s fastest growing sports globally.

A fight for everyone and every body

The weekend featured a full line-up of races across all divisions – including Individual Open and Pro, Adaptive, Doubles and Relay events – showcasing a wide range of fitness levels and fostering an atmosphere of competition and community.

From elite athletes chasing World Championship slots to everyday athletes facing HYROX for the first time, HYROX Johannesburg delivered exciting and inspiring performances for everyone.

The second HYROX Johannesburg of 2025 was the first in the 25/26 season. The event attracted 6,100 athletes, of which 54% were women and 46% were men, competing in all divisions.

This gender split marks a remarkable shift in South African fitnessreflecting increased female participation and empowerment in competitive fitness. It also highlights HYROX’s role in promoting an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages all genders to excel in fitness challenges.

This trend aligns with broader national movements toward gender balance and increasing participation of women in health and fitness activities.

Growing the HYROX community

particularly, the event attracted many first-time participantsmarking a major milestone in the development of the HYROX community in Johannesburg and South Africa as a whole.

Race Director Simon Goldsbrough says: “It’s been incredible to have so many first timers, but also people coming back for another bite of the cherry. As HYROX grows in popularity, we need to make sure we give athletes the best experience. This starts from registration, to the pitch and ensuring HYROX movement standards are met by all athletes.”

HYROX South Africa continues to attract a remarkable mix of people, embodying the country’s diversity and passion for fitness, including acclaimed actress Thando Thabethe who was represented in the HYROX Women category at her third HYROX event.

HYROX brings together sports stars, influencers, fitness experts and celebritiesall united by a shared love of challenge and community. This convergence reflects the true South African spirit, the spirit of inclusiveness and collective celebration through sport.

A real sight

The attendance of spectators was equally remarkable, with around 7,500 fans packing the venue throughout the weekendcreating a supportive energy for those involved. This vibrant gathering once again reflected the unique essence of South African culture, where sport is a powerful force that unites people.

Over the course of the weekend, our spectators were enthralled with traditional dances, volunteers cheered on the athletes with unwavering enthusiasm, and a strong sense of community permeated the event. it was a true celebration of how sport brings South Africans togethercultivating common joy in a way that defines the character of the inclusive nation.

A distinct achievement

Central to this has been our incredible support team, particularly our dedicated volunteers and judges. Their passion and commitment ensured flawless execution and held to the highest standards in every training session, playing a vital role in the success of the event.

Based on the success of three events hosted in 2025, Expectations are high for upcoming HYROX events across South Africa in 2026. As local participation steadily grows, the series promises more opportunities for athletes to become part of the HYROX Community.

The HYROX SA team expressed their sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to making the second HYROX Johannesburg such a special achievement.
