In a previous post I have commented on the development of the wellness industry over the last 20 years. I have watched this movement unfold and gain speed thanks to well -organized food activists, functional and alternative doctors, chiropractors and “holistic healers”. Over time, they have slowly shaped the public perception of food, nutrition and medicine.

They are convincing because they represent a few things Anyone can agree – Eating more vegetables, eating more foods and fewer processed foods, consume less sugar, going out, keeping shape and pay attention to how your body feels. However, they reject science when it comes to a specific recommendation that supports these goals. Sometimes they are also out of contact with what typical Americans have access to and the challenges they can fight.

Diet and health

Every five years the dietary guidelines for Americans are released. This document is the result of a reference provided by a scientific committee This examines current nutrition and diseases. Of their recommendations, the government is accused of creating a set of nutrition guidelines. Calley means It has been criticized by the recommendations of the Expert Committee because they state that there is not enough evidence to say that all Americans should eat less over-processed foods. Is it a good idea to throw away this 453 -page scientific exhibition and the review of literature, in return for a so -called “simple document” by the Maha group?

There are so many better policies that could Sugar Nutrition training was added to external patient health care environments.

The grift

Why are registered dietitians outraged by these proposed changes and the overall direction of health and nutrition our current administration is taking? They reject a whole body of evidence that took years to develop. They also reject a whole group of health professionals who are truly trained in food and nutrition.

We are now in a place where a doctor who has not been certified and not transferred to the General Surgeon’s office. To one interview Regarding health, Casey Means (whose goal of her life is “dealing with her basic causes because we are sick”) made a statement such as “there is no specialty for metabolism, even though there is an amazing relationship between metabolism and every aspect of our lives and health”.

What?

News Flash: Registered Dietitians are literally trained in metabolism. Much of the scope of implementation of practice in the field of diet is dedicated to preventive medicine.

There are really many research and many books written about biochemistry and the subject of nutrition and metabolism. I have a book on my shelf called “Diet in Health and Diseases” and I have taught these lessons in my career. However, it means projects they use using terms such as “good energy” and discusses its “solutions” to “mitochondrial health”. It sounds amazing, but it’s not exactly true.

Metabolic biomarkers are not young

My biggest issue with the means is that it presents information about diet and metabolism as if it has discovered magical and new information. Is not.

It is exciting for me Means CaseyHe wrote a book that seems to make statements indicating that he did not learn about metabolism in the Medical School. It even goes to compose theories about human metabolism and to pass them as proven.

As registered dieticians we are specially trained for evaluating metabolic markers. In fact, most of the clinical aspects of our professional practice focus on it. Metabolic indicators include body weight (body mass index), fasting glucose, insulin, liver enzymes and lipid profiles. Regular monitoring of these values is an important window in your overall health.

In the Huberman workshop podcast (Turn your health by improving the regulation of metabolism, hormone and blood sugar) means that “you should probably take metabolic laboratory work three or four times a year” (interest is also co -owner of a company that offers blood tests through their laboratory).

Flash News: Most doctors will prescribe a “complete metabolic panel” on your annual visit. Once a year is probably enough if your lab is normal. These metabolic tests are not secret or new.

Nutrition recommendations in Maha season

Overall I can agree with its basic nutritional requirement that we need to eat less processed foods and eat more foods high in fibers, omega-3s, healthy protein, probiotics, high in antioxidants. Again, it’s not new. This is the Diet Studies are based on. The dietary guidelines for Americans It also includes foods high in fibers, omega-2 (oily fish twice a week) and many fruits and vegetables (antioxidants).

However, I am not aligned with some of the other diet messages I hear. During her interview with Andrew Huberman, it means that we call our germicide the “pharmacy in our body” and a bunch of other kookie things. She likes to use the word mitochondria (the work department of our cells) and makes blankets for over-processed foods (and “toxic food supply”). It is a break this is why your body cells lead you to eat more. Its diet is to “eat more whole foods than good soil”. Okay, more the whole food is a good idea. However, it is misleading to suggest so much ground “is not good” (her claim is due to “industrialized agriculture“.

Recommendations that have roots actually

My philosophy has always been a rooted in reality when it comes to behavior change. Our jobs as health teachers are to frame the recommendations that are easy to adhere to.

What can this person do realistically with their means and their current lifestyle? In both my education and practice, I have learned that there are many meal plans that can be codified as a “healthy diet”. With “healthy eating” we mean a meal plan that improves metabolic indicators. Again, it has always been to improve the metabolic indicators!

However, today’s Maha movement seems to be overly focused on food ingredients. Focus must be dietary standards and established research on nutrition and treatment and disease prevention. According to Mean’s Cooking blogs, it seems to recommend avoiding vegetable oils and other foods or ingredients (ie wheat and dairy products), arguing that they “cause inflammation”.

No one will adopt general recommendations if they do not match their taste, cultural preferences or budgets. I doubt that a rural mother of the three is going to appreciate the linseed crackers with Zen royal seeds. But I deviate …

Operating drug

The wellness industry is not interested in sick children or will help you. The RFK JR and its HHS coats seem to be hell to burn a whole body of evidence that took years to get.

I wonder why doctors change to any kind of “alternative” or “functional” drug. Maybe they weren’t very good regular doctors? Or maybe their ego had been able to get a lot of attention from the media and big money. These branded health influences include: Dr. OZ, Dr Will Cole (Chiropractor), Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Josh Ax, Dr. Gundry, Chris Kresser, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Phil and Dr. Mercola. Almost each of them sells supplements or tests and other high -cost products.

Functional and alternative medicine professionals claim that traditional medicine only faces illnesses and does nothing to prevent it. If you start listening, you will hear it. These peoples repeat some version of the same buzz line: “Chronic disease is increasing at a worrying rate!” And everyone blames the same things: sugar, wheat, dairy and spores. None of which has no evidence of. He gets older.

On the other side, moral and specialized health professionals Take into account individual needs, personal medical and social history. And they already know how to evaluate the results of your metabolic blood table.

By identifying red flags

Mitochondrial health! Magic blood tests (actually used for decades)! “If you do these five things. (And buy my supplements) you will be healthier”!

Functional Medicine Grifters always victim to your feelings. Make false promises that the sound pioneer. Just messages and apply to broad acoustic (all sexes, ages) and want to believe that things like:

  • Natural is better
  • Personal experiences (anecdotal evidence) compensate for population -based survey
  • A bad experience with a doctor who negates all medical advice

I promise you, messages like the one presented as new and transformations are a Grift. It is up to you to think about what makes sense and who to believe.
