The role of nature at the source of spring

By: Roxane Shymkiw

Where is your happy place? The chances are, they are somewhere in nature. Ever wonder why you feel more relaxed and focused after spending time outdoors? Science has shown us that there is a strong relationship between the time spent on nature and the positive effects of mental health. Nature plays an important role in your well -being and can affect mental, emotional and physical well -being. Is it true that spring affects the body? Absolutely. Longer days and increased sunlight stimulates the release of hormones such as serotonin, which improves our levels of mood and energy. It can enhance our inner circadian rhythm, giving us a boost to energy, increased focus and better sleep. Sunlight also increases the production of vitamin D in the body, improving our mood, immune function and bone health.

Every spring, the first day of bright sunshine, blue sky and warmer weather, everyone is suddenly out, playing in the park, meeting friends to sit by the river or just walk through the neighborhood. I do not know if it is because we feel like we have worked all winter or if we are just pulled in the countryside by the nature that calls us, but somehow our bodies tell us that we have to go out. According to scientists, people who spend more time in nature have better cognitive function and focus and report higher levels of happiness and positivity. Nature can enhance endorphin levels and production of dopamine, resulting in reduced stress and anxiety and promotion of happiness and satisfaction. Nature exposure has also been associated with improved well -being and stronger sense of belonging. Being outdoors encourages activity, exercise and social interaction, which can reduce stress and improve cardiovascular health.

Between our urban environment and expenditure all day in an office, we can experience mental fatigue and intensity from sensory overload. We can compensate for this by spending time in nature, which studies have shown that they have a positive effect on the body by reducing cortisol levels, muscle tension, heart rate and blood pressure. Nature helps the body and mind relax, promote creativity and allow us to return more focused and capable of concentrating. Connection to nature can also lead to a greater sense of purpose.

How can nature affect our mental health?

  • Attention – Nature can restore our attention and ability to concentrate.

  • Disposal – Nature can improve the mood and feelings of happiness.

  • Self -regulation – Nature can help us feel calmer and more capable of controlling our impulses.

  • Stress – The sounds and smells of nature help us feel more relaxed and reduce the heart rate and symptoms of anxiety and physical stress.

  • Social – Nature can affect generosity, cooperation and sense of social connection.

Beyond all the benefits we earn directly from existence to nature, the exploitation of time outdoors can also promote the sense of connection and management of the natural world.

There are many fun and easy ways to increase your exposure to nature that do not require much effort.

Try these ways to add more nature to your weekly routine:

  1. · Spend time in the parks or take a stroll around the sanctuary of Inglewood Bird, the Fish Creek District Park, the Nose Hill Park or the local trails if you are not in Calgari!

  2. · Sit by the river or a lake and listen to the water.

  3. · Move your routine out.

  4. · Take a short walk at noon.

  5. · Add plants to your indoors.

  6. · Meet friends outdoors to socialize.

  7. · Plant a garden in your yard or patio.

Nature sinking is one of the simplest ways to support your overall health and prosperity. Nature gives us a sedative and restorative space to disconnect from the noise of modern life and to reconnect with our minds and bodies. Why not add nature to your wellness tool this spring and make nature part of your weekly routine? Nature is around us.
