The American Heart Association and the Giants Foundation, the non -profit organization of New York giants, collected representatives from 12 local schools for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator training (AED) on March 20 at Metlife Stadium. According to the American Heart Association data, almost 9 of the 10 people who face cardiac arrest outside the hospital are dying, in part because they do not receive immediate CPR more than half of the year. The CPR, especially if executed immediately, can double or triple the possibility of a person’s survival.

Early recognition and action in a heart need is the difference between life and death. When the seconds matter, it is important to have people nearby who are confident and capable of starting to manage CPR. This event with the Giants Foundation helps to support this critical link in the community. We know that with each CPR training we are doing we are one step closer to ensuring that everyone is prepared and authorized to perform CPR and become a vital link in the survival chain. “

Nancy Brown, CEO, American Heart Association

The American Heart Association is the world leader in science, education and rejuvenation and publishes the official scientific guidelines for CPR. With nearly 3 of the 4 heart attacks outside the hospital in houses, knowing how to perform CPR is extremely important. With more people ready to execute CPR, the opportunity for a positive increase in community recovery.

CPR only for compression, known as CPR only as CPR hands, can be as effective as the traditional CPR in the first minutes of emergency response and is a skill that anyone can learn. It’s as simple as call 911 if you see a teenager or adult suddenly collapsing and then pressing hard and quickly in the center of the chest.

Schools receiving CPR in school kits are:

  • Haccensack School District, Haccensack, NJ
  • School area of Springfield, Springfield, NJ
  • New Milford School District, New Milford, NJ
  • Oradell, Oradell, NJ school area
  • School District Clifton, Clifton, NJ
  • School District Montclair, Montclair, NJ
  • Special services Bergen County, Paramus, NJ
  • East Orange School District, East Orange, NJ
  • Morristown School District, Morristown, NJ
  • Saddle Brook School District, Saddle Brook, NJ

In addition to training, the Giants Foundation donates resources for schools to bring these rescue skills back to their campuses and to continue to build confidence and abilities to respond to an emergency. Each of the 12 schools received a CPR in the Schools Kit and three of the schools involved received AED. The CPR in school kit includes 10 hands only CPR Manikins and 10 AED training and curriculum tools for the training of additional students, teachers, staff and parents. Participants who are involved learned the right interest rate and depth of compressions and how to use their new resources.

“Having a game plan to improve CPR results in a heart emergency is critical when you are against the watch,” said Allison Stangeby, Vice President of Community and Corporate Relations for New York Giants. “The Giants Foundation was proud to be able to apply for grant funding through the NFL Foundation to provide CPR to school kits and AEDs throughout our region. We were excited to welcome our community members to participate in certainty ”.

In 2023, the NFL launched the Smart Heart Sports Coalition in collaboration with founding members, including NBA, MLB, MLS, NHL, NCAA, American Heart Association and others. The Coalition aims to support all 50 states to adopt policies based on evidence to prevent fatal results from heart attack among high school students. The American Heart Association reports that up to 23,000 people under the age of 18 experience cardiac arrest outside a hospital each year, with almost 40% related to sports. It is a leading cause of death for students-athletes. Applying these simple, cost -effective strategies in all 50 states can save lives.
