Overview

During this lecture, Jenny Radesky, MD and Megan Moreno, MD, MSED., MPH, discussed youth -focusing on social media research and their impact on frames, methods and products.

Dr. Radesky presented the Dreamer model (dynamic, relational, ecological approach to the research of media outlets, Barr, Kirkorian, Coyne & Radesky, 2024), a new conceptual context for conducting research on the use of childhood media. This model is improved in earlier research, which only focused on the child “screen”, exploring the framework of the use of media in parent-child relationships, how the means affect both parents and children, The role of the media design and the way in which factors such as poverty and results affect stress. She shared a recent study using the Dreamer model and discussed her relevance about clinical guidance using the 5CS box.

Dr. Moreno described the 5CS box for the use of the media. He then presented the work of the brain, behavior and prosperity, which focuses on the intersection of adolescent development and the use of digital media. This project uses an interdisciplinary approach guided by a youth advisory council and has informed new methods and approaches to social media research between adolescents. Dr. Moreno also discussed how this project intersects with the 5CS frame.

About the director’s innovation speakers series

Nimh founded the director’s innovation speakers to encourage broad, interdisciplinary thinking in the development of scientific initiatives and programs and to push for theoretical jumps in science in continuing growth thinking. Innovation speakers are encouraged to describe their work in terms of breaking the existing boundaries and develop successful new ideas, as well as working outside their primary expertise in ways that have pushed their fields forward. We encourage discussions about the concept of innovation, creativity, discoveries and examples.
