Like many other holidays, Halloween is one of those times when it’s easy to throw caution to the wind and stuff our faces with sugar robes. On the one hand, who doesn’t love an excuse to dress up as a cat and play with pumpkins? On the other hand, eating highly processed sugary candy is a one-way ticket to tooth decay, hormone imbalances, and a bad case of the grumps. Conventional sweets are full of artificial colors, “natural” flavors, refined sugars and hydrogenated oils. The good news? There are many homemade healthy Halloween options!

But what about the children?

But we’re worried about the kids, right? We don’t want them to get lost. I hear you now: “But I only buy Halloween candy for the kids!” Right. Despite your best intentions, you know the mini chocolate bar will disappear long before the trick-or-treaters hit. After all, don’t little ones deserve some health-promoting superfood-packed goodies, too? YES!!!

There may once have been a time when Halloween was the only time of year when kids ate junk. Now, treats are everywhere. Birthday parties, school functions, chocolates or sweets from benevolent grocers or local businesses, sports and activities – the list goes on. Even “healthy snacks” are it basically heals.

Too much sugar in our children’s diet is linked to portliness, risk of cardiovascular disease, dental cavities and it can affect their mental health. This is probably not news to you – the dangers of excess sugar have been making headlines for years. It’s time to stop the cycle of processed candy and there’s no time like the present!

Instead of getting candy from the store, try making these healthy treats for you and your family.

And there are some non-food treat suggestions too!

Note: Please know that I do not intend to deliver them to your door. The intention behind these Halloween treats is for situations where it is safe to interact with family and friends.
