Does your size down there negatively affect your self-esteem?

Many guys put a lot of stock in their member. If you’ve ever seen spam emails or ads on porn streaming sites, you’ve probably realized that many men wish their dicks were bigger. It may seem strange, but this little guy has a lot of power over men’s self-image.

The first time I started noticing my own size was the first time I slept with another man. I had never really thought about whether or not I was “big” or not, but after seeing another man in the flesh, I began to think that on some level, maybe dick size did matter.

After all, we live in a “bigger is better” world — whether we’re upgrading our fast-food meals or wanting a bigger TV, modern culture is obsessed with size. But is this healthy? Knowing that realistically you can’t do much – if anything – to affect your size, wouldn’t it make more sense to focus on loving the penis you have?

Furthermore, how much does penis size affect your partner’s pleasure? There’s research that suggests it’s not a huge factor, especially for straight men or men who sleep primarily with women, as they’re more likely to climax from clitoral stimulation than penetration.

But no matter who—if anyone—you want to sleep with, you can still feel insecure about your penis, and it’s a topic that too many men harbor negative feelings about secretly. Being the investigative journalist that I am, I decided to ask the kids I know about a time when their little friend made them self-aware.

As I spoke to the 14 men below, a pattern began to emerge: comparison is the root of all evil. So what do men think about their penis size? Read on to find out:

“The first time I really realized how big I was was in high school when I started using the locker room. I always said “How do I measure?” — Mike

“The first time I hooked up with a girl, she was like, ‘Wow, she’s older than my ex!’ and then he was like, “Yeah, I guess dick size matters.” — Christopher.

“I found out I was pretty, er, lucky down there the first time I changed in the locker room after gym class. My friend was like, “Sh*t, man.” It made me feel good, but at the same time I don’t think about it that often.” — Joshua

“When I first had sex with my girlfriend, she kept asking, ‘Is that it?’ and then I knew I would probably never count (haha). Needless to say, he dumped me a few weeks later. I’m taking it in stride, though. Not everyone needs a big dick.” — Jason

“I try not to watch porn anymore because these guys are like freaking gods and I’m just a mere mortal. But in all seriousness, as great as porn is, I think it creates this insecurity.” — Rob

“When I first saw another bird in person, hard, I was like, ‘Hmm, yeah, that seems like a big deal.’ Being a gay guy, I feel like everyone wants to talk about the size of their dick.” – Ellie

RELATED: Who cares more about penis size, gays or straight guys?

“I really don’t notice other guys’ dicks or their sizes. I’m kind of stuck with the one I have.” — Edward

“I remember watching HBO after hours and seeing a guy’s soft dick and immediately comparing mine to it. Did I really feel… inadequate? I guess that would be the right word. I’m not sure, it was just the first time I thought it might matter.” — Aaron

“I think I first started caring about the size of my dick when I heard some girls at school talking about their boyfriends.” [penises] and I think, “I really hope they think mine is okay.” – Nicolas

RELATED: Does penis girth matter? Here’s what you need to know

“I remember being in a group sex situation and being really self-conscious. Even though I really shouldn’t, it’s like I’m ingrained in my mind to compare myself to other people, and sex is such a huge part of our culture. It was definitely terrible.” — Miles

“Porn. Porn is when I realized dick size mattered. I knew I’d never be, like, 12 inches, but then I found out most girls don’t want that anyway and it felt great.” — Noah

“Well, I guess I always noticed it mattered, but as long as you look proportional, I’m sure you’re fine. We need to stop putting so much stock in how we measure up – pardon the pun.” – Leo

“I think I realized I was bigger than other boys when the girl I was seeing at the time couldn’t handle it. Then it happened again and again and again. I’d take being average over a large loaf of bread any day of the week.” — Kevin

“I guess the first time I noticed my penis size compared to other guys was when I was running around with my friends in high school. It wasn’t like gay, we would just do it jerking off together while watching porn. I would definitely sneak a peek at my friends to see who was bigger.” — Curtis
