Here is my guide to what to eat, where to stay and what to do in beautiful Victoria, BC!

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, really has it all. With a nod to its English heritage, its streets are lined with charming buildings, lush gardens and healing ocean views — not to mention its vibrant food and drink scene! It’s no surprise that it’s such a popular destination, offering everything from whale watching to high tea.

I actually lived in Victoria for two years while attending the University of Victoria from 1995-1998 (wow, I instantly feel old). I LOVED it, and still love it. I took a solo trip to Victoria recently for a break and couldn’t recommend it more.

History of Victoria

Victoria is steeped in history! It is the provincial capital of British Columbia and named after (you guessed it) Queen Victoria. The city is one of the oldest in the Pacific Northwest (British settlements began in 1843), which is clear when you visit all the charming historic buildings, especially the two most famous landmarks: the Parliament Buildings (completed in 1897 and the home of The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia) and Empress Hotel which opened in 1908. Walking the streets is like stepping back in time, and it really is one of my favorite cities in Canada.

Where to stay in Victoria

  • Magnolia Hotel & Spa: This is where I stayed and it’s 10/10 for me. It is a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of the city, just a few steps from the port, shops and the best restaurants. I didn’t rent a car and I didn’t need one. The beds were so comfortable, the service was incredible and I had a massage at their lovely spa. Magnolia has thought of everything, and even has little cards that offer curated tours for its guests based on interest (ie: shopping, pubs, bike trails…).
  • Fairmont Empress: The Fairmont Empress in Victoria is an award-winning hotel and National Historic Site dating back to 1908. With unparalleled views of the Inner Harbour, this historic hotel (aka castle) is iconic, luxurious and as classy as it gets. Even if you don’t end up staying here, take some time to walk around!
  • Oak Bay Beach Hotel: I haven’t stayed here, but it is highly recommended.
  • Victoria Regent: Same with this hotel.
  • Grand Pacific Hotel: Great location, right on the Inner Harbor and just steps from downtown and the BC Legislature and Parliament Buildings. I stayed here a long time ago and enjoyed it.

Where to eat in Victoria

The food scene in Victoria has exploded since I was last here. Here is a list of some of the top recommended places to eat:

Where to shop in Victoria

Things to do in Victoria

  • Ogden Point Breakwater (a popular walk near downtown Victoria that follows the concrete structure from Dallas Street to the Straits of Juan de Fuca to a lighthouse at its far end)
  • Royal Museum BC
  • Browse to Parliament Buildings (The lights illuminate them every night, making it a great must-see on a night walk)
  • Relax in a spa:
    • Magnolia Spa (I got the massage but they are known for their facials and they specialize in treatments for women my age around menopause)
    • The Boathouse Spa at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel
    • Havn Noridc Spa: floating spa in the harbor? So unique!
  • Travel to Oak Bay
  • Take a walk Beacon Hill Park
  • Enter the water: Find a local rental or tour company and kayak, paddle or canoe in the Inner Harbor
  • take one sea taxi
  • Hike up Mount Douglas: The largest park in the Saanich region, Mount Douglas offers stunning 360-degree views of the area.
  • Walk Government Street
  • Butchart Gardens: This is a famous 120 year old 55 acre garden located on Brentwood Bay. It is a National Historic Site of Canada, with over 900 varieties! Complete with places to eat and drink inside to allow you to spend some time among the flowers.
  • Miniature world
  • Explore China Town. Fun fact: it’s the first China Town in all of Canada!
  • Craigdarroch Castle
  • Victoria Bug Zoo
