Organizing can seem REALLY overwhelming. I know that feeling, I’ve 100% been there. So how do you find the motivation to keep going? Today I’m going to give you five easy motivations to get organized.

Before we get started, my 5-Word Organization Challenge really helps simplify organization so you can get started!

Upcoming event;

Okay, what works for a LOT of people is to set an upcoming event. Maybe it’s having guests at your house or an upcoming party — but sometimes if you just create an event — even if it’s just a game night with friends — MANY people find that to motivate them to get things done, which usually they will postpone.

Or, if you’re my kids, we have rules about clean rooms and going to a friend’s house, so you might have to do the same for yourself. No Netflix until you organize an area.

I will say that this often has the opposite effect of making you feel wildly overwhelmed — so I think you really need to get to know yourself before applying it. Sometimes the event AND my will to organize can lead to a personal breakdown — but maybe it’s just me

The White Flag of Life

Sometimes my house seems to close in on me. I’m just losing a battle. I can’t find the spices I need, I can’t find my keys, I can’t put anything away, so it just sits in piles. My house wins.

The problem is that my house can’t win. I’m the one who owns it — LITERALLY. Well, me and the bank — but that’s a story for another day.

When you just feel like your house is winning, it’s time to turn that frustration to fixing it.

Now is not the time to swim — you’re better than that. Now is the time to fix it. Giving up is not an option! Taking slow and simple steps is the answer (and yes, I have lots of advice on this!).

Here is a great analogy for that — in my other life I am The Pregnancy Nurse®. So often people are in pain for much of labor. BUT once their cervix is gone they can push. This allows them to turn their pain into action and THRUST.

That doesn’t mean pushing is fun. It’s still frustrating and tiring — but it’s action.

Now it’s your time to spin and push — just no baby this time. Hope. 🙂 Although pregnant ladies really know how to nest — so if that’s you. Let’s do it!

Blinkers

So as you’re thinking OK, let’s do this — you might look around and realize that this is a really big job.

And that’s okay — it’s a lot of work. Honestly, this is why I like smaller houses…. Hahaha

BUT now is the time to put on those blinders and just look in ONE area.

Maybe it’s just your dresses, or maybe it’s your entire closet, but not your chest of drawers.

How big the area is is up to you.

One of my favorite things to do is set a timer and take things out for about 2 minutes. Then I sort those things out, clean up the area and put what I want back into a good system. I think I can pull things off for 2 minutes — I can do anything for 2 minutes (except burpees, I can’t do those)….

And honestly, in 2 minutes I could take off all my dresses and cardigans. And this is a very nice dent in my wardrobe.

In less than 30 minutes I could suddenly have a closet that doesn’t overwhelm me. And I sure like that feeling.

Timers can help us do a lot of good things.

Grab the neat 10 minute challenge if you think timers could help you get more done:

Time is money

This gets me — mostly because budgeting is something I’m behind on — but I’m not that good with my time.

But, when you think of time as a finite resource and you can either spend the next hour relaxing on the couch, or take 30 minutes and make a meaningful change in an area that’s bothering you, it really helps your day run better.

It just seems pointless to choose some effort and THEN some Netflix.

I’m a big believer that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing — we can have “down” time, but also use some time to get organized too!

Of course, sometimes we also spend our money on junk because we can — and that’s okay, too.

But I think most of us try to make the most of the money we can, and seeing time the same way sometimes helps me use it better.

Get a buddy

Get an organizer dude! I’ve heard it a lot, but honestly, I’ve never done it.

  • I was ashamed to tell people that I needed a friend
  • It was hard to find time to organize together because most of my friends were also busy moms.

BUT I have a solution for this. Digital solution.

Organized Home can be the organizing friend for you! In it you will find:

  • Tips for decluttering specific areas around your home
  • Ways to enlist your brain in your organizational plans
  • Simple organization solutions that work and you can implement them in your home.

Honestly, at just $15/month I would 100% take that offer up. Plus, when you’re ready to tell that friend you’re ready to go it alone, you can just cancel. It’s a really great deal!

Having someone walk the organizing path with you can really motivate you to get started — so come to The Organized Home! It really helps to break your home down into bite-sized pieces of organization to get you started.

And I know that’s what you want. You wouldn’t be reading this article if it weren’t for you. I can’t wait for your home to become that organized, easy home you’ve always dreamed of. It’s possible!
