Sleep is – without a doubt – one of the best forms of self-care. Good quality sleep is essential for healthy immune function, positive mood, mental clarity and healthy relationships. Sleep refills your tank so you can conquer your day, but sleep isn’t just about the number of hours you log. It’s about quality of the sleep you get. And good sleep starts with a good mattress.

So what qualities make a good mattress? Comfortable? Control. Safe and non-toxic? Check and check. After all, you spend 1/3 of your life in bed. Best to be a healthy place! That’s why we recently replaced our kids’ mattresses when we moved into our new house with one Nectar Classic Full and one Nectar Premier Full.

In this article, we’ll share our experience with Nectar and answer common questions like:

  • Is the Nectar mattress safe for children?
  • Is a memory foam mattress good for a child?
  • Which mattress firmness is best for a child?
  • Are Nectar mattresses out of gas?
  • Is Nectar an organic mattress?
  • Is Nectar an organic mattress?
  • Do nectar layers have formaldehyde?
  • Are Nectar Layers Healthy?

My experience with Nectar Classic Full and Premier Full

Nectar layers is a nice box mattress option. What’s more convenient than ordering a mattress online and having it show up on your doorstep days later? No delivery on schedule. We don’t have to deal with bringing a mattress home over our car. Convenience is a win, but what we Really as for them is that they are CertiPUR, which means they exist without flame retardants and chemicals.

Because we got these mattresses for our kids, the CertiPUR certification made a big difference. Not all name brands have this certification, and for us, it made all the difference.

What is the deal with CertiPUR?

The CertiPUR-US program is a non-profit organization which focuses on foam products. Specifically, this program zeroes in on the flexible polyurethane foam used in bedding and upholstered furniture. CertiPUR certification is awarded to products that are produced with low emissions, perform well and are durable.

In other words, when a product earns CertiPUR certification, it means that the foam used in the mattress meets (or exceeds) CertiPUR-US’ stringent standards for emissions, performance and durability. A CertiPUR certified mattress means:

  • It is made without ozone depleting substances
  • It is free of flame retardants such as PBDE, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”)

What do our children say?

Our kids love these mattresses! While I’m not sure we notice much of a difference between the Nectar Classic and the Nectar Premier, the number one takeaway is that our kids are happy, sleeping well, and completely comfortable at night.

Is the Nectar mattress safe for children?

I know what you’re thinking: it’s memory foam mattresses Really safe? The answer: it depends.

Not all foam mattresses are safe for kids, but Nectar mattresses are not your average foam mattress. They are CertiPUR-US certified and remember that the CertiPUR-US program requires foam mattresses to be manufactured with very low levels of substances in the foam that may be harmful to human health and/or the environment.

Is a memory foam mattress good for a child?

In the not-so-distant past, most people slept on coil mattresses. These coils (steel springs) weren’t always the most comfortable and were notorious for causing back pain, slipped discs and even nerve damage as the coils began to lose tension over the years. Foam mattresses, however, are becoming more and more popular, and the reason is simple: foam mattresses are delightfully comfortable.

But is this the right solution for children? Memory foam can be comfortable for children. These mattresses support the alignment of your child’s spine and offer great pressure relief thanks to their many layers:

  • A quilted cover that breathes
  • A 3-inch foam mattress with gel to keep your child comfortable (no more hot nights in non-breathable foam mattresses!)
  • A 2-inch layer of dynamically adjustable foam to provide proper spinal alignment
  • A 7 inch base layer to support the other layers

Another reason to try memory foam for your kids: they have very low motion transfer, which is great for any child who shares a bed with a sibling or you. Motion transfer refers to how much (or little) the mattress will wiggle, wiggle, or bounce when someone else is tossing and turning. Low motion transportation = better sleep for all parties involved!

So is the Nectar memory foam mattress good for kids? Yes! Memory Foam mattresses are comfortable and Nectar mattresses do not disappoint. They are comfortable in terms of spinal alignment, but they are also comfortable in terms of temperature regulation. Add the CertiPUR certification and we’re sold!

What mattress firmness is best for a child?

When shopping for a crib mattress, you probably quickly discovered that babies need firm sleep surfaces to help prevent SIDS. But does this apply to all children? As it turns out, overly squishy mattresses aren’t good for anyone, including kids. Mattresses that are too soft simply do not support your spine the way it should be supported.

The best stability for children is medium hard. Medium stability supports proper spinal alignment and accommodates sleepers in all positions. Regardless of your little one’s preferred position, the adaptive foam relieves pressure on pressure points such as shoulders, hips and legs.

In addition, as children can easily overheat at night, a good mattress should be of medium firmness and have cooling properties that help stabilize your child’s body temperature.

Nectar mattresses out of gas?

Outgassing is a hot topic when it comes to upholstered items, and that includes mattresses, new furniture and new carpet. So what is off-gassing and off-gassing Nectar layers? Off-gassing occurs when new, manufactured items (which include furniture, carpeting, wall paint, and more) release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals into the air. Off-gassing produces the telltale smell after you paint or unwrap your mattress in a box.

Just like low-VOC paint, CertiPUR certified mattresses are less off-gassing than their non-certified counterparts.

New memory foam mattresses it takes time for the gas to go off, but these layers take much less time than non-certified layers. Here are some tips for releasing gas:

  • Open your mattress in an empty room and open all the windows
  • Allow the mattress to remain in this room for 1-3 days until the odor disappears (Nectar declares ready within 24 hoursbut you can always let it air out a bit more if you want.)
  • Do not place a mattress cover or sheets on the mattress until the deaeration is complete

Tip: You can also use an air purifier during this process. (I’ll be honest, we did this process as I didn’t notice any smell.)

Is Nectar an organic layer?

Nectar Layers they are eco-friendly and also have organic ingredients. The cotton used for Nectar mattresses is ethically sourced using fair trade standards, handpicked, loom fed and even dyed with low impact dyes. The cotton (think: breathable quilted cover?) is made from the finest organic Fair Trade & GOTS, non-GMO cotton.

What does GOTS mean? (No no Game of Thrones!) GOTS stands for The Global Standard for Organic Textiles (GOTS) and is recognized as the leading standard for processing textile products — such as fabrics, yarns, etc. — made from organic fibres. The independent certification it includes processing standards, ecological standards and social standards as well.

Do Nectar mattresses contain formaldehyde?

You don’t have to look far to find a foam mattress with formaldehyde or toxic flame retardants, but luckily, Nectar doesn’t fall into that category — and you can thank CertiPUR-US for that. Remember, any CertiPUR certified product means it contains none of the following:

  • PBDEs or flame retardants
  • Heavy metals
  • Formaldehyde
  • Ozone destroyers
  • Phthalates.

It also has low VOC emissions for better indoor air quality.

Are Nectar mattresses healthy?

This was a big concern for us when we were shopping for new mattresses for our kids, and after a lot of research, here are our top picks:

  • All foam used in Nectar mattresses is certified by the CertiPUR-US program
  • Nectar has the lowest VOC emissions
  • All cotton used in Nectar mattresses is organic and GOTS certified
  • Temperature-adaptive foam keeps your kids cool while they sleep (and Cool sleep is healthy sleep!)
  • Memory foam supports proper spinal alignment, which is essential for healthy bones and joints

Psst! They also make a version for your doggies!

Catch some Zzz’s with your very own nectar layer!
