OK guys, let’s settle the age-old debate: Moisturize vs. Moisturize — what’s the difference when it comes to skin care?

In a nutshell: “hydration” is like giving your skin a big gulp of water, turning it into a plump and glowing version of itself. “Hydration”, on the other hand, is like putting a lid on that big sip to ensure that none of that juicy hydration escapes.

Both are necessary steps to show off healthy, more radiant skin. Here’s the lowdown:

What does it have to do with hydration?

Hydration is all about quenching your skin’s thirst for water. When your skin cells look like plump, happy grapes (as opposed to wrinkled raisins), your skin looks more vibrant and youthful, and those pesky fine lines and wrinkles are less noticeable.

According to a study published in Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, Well-moisturized skin also has an improved barrier function. What does this mean? Simply put, a strong skin barrier helps prevent water loss from the skin and removes environmental toxins and irritants, making your skin more resilient and less prone to inflammation and damage.

What does Moisturizing mean?

Hydration is your trusted hydration assistant. It locks in all that precious hydration, ensuring it doesn’t evaporate into the air. An article from American Academy of Dermatology confirms that effective hydration also minimizes trans-epidermal water loss, keeping your skin smooth and soft. The secret sauce? Emollients or occlusive ingredients! They create a protective layer on the skin, acting as personal protection against dryness.

  • Occlusives: These are your heavy stuff, like butter, oils, and candles. They create a natural barrier on your skin, trapping moisture to seal it all in. They’re perfect for extremely dry skin that needs all the help it can get to lock in moisture.
  • Emollients: Now, these are conditioners and pacifiers, often made from fatty acids and lipids. They’re more than surface level — they penetrate the skin to strengthen your natural moisture barrier from the inside out. They leave your skin softer and more supple, without the greasy residue that some concealers can leave behind.

When the skin thirsts for more

The difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin boils down to what is missing: water or oil. Dehydrated skin craves water, while dry skin is low in oil. Contrary to popular belief, all skin types can become dehydrated – yes, even oily skin.

A few memory joggers… Dehydrated skin vs. dry skin

  • Dehydrated skin it’s a condition, not a skin type. So, even if you are normally oily or combination, you can experience dehydration. Signs of dehydrated skin include dullness, itchiness and a less elastic appearance.
  • Dry skin, on the other hand, is a stubborn skin type that can be aggravated by various factors, such as harsh ingredients or extreme weather conditions. Symptoms may include peeling, tightness and redness.

So, to sum it up…

Think of “hydration” and “hydration” as the Batman and Robin of your skincare routine — they’re most effective when they work together. Hydration replenishes water content, but if there’s nothing to lock that water in, you’re essentially pouring it down a colander. Finding a product that offers the right mix of moisturizing and hydrating elements for your skin type is key to achieving that gorgeous glow.

Hydration Heroes

For intense hydration, you’ll want products rich in humectants or osmolytes such as hyaluronic acid, betaine, and glycerin. These heavy hits have the power to hold enormous amounts of water—some up to 1,000 times their own weight!

Moisturizers MVP

If you need a little hydration to lock in that hydration, for this powerful mission you should look for products with emollients or blocking agents like butters, esters (naturally modified oils that are lighter than oils), and vegetable oils. Our favorite oil right now is oat oil (found in Bestie Solid Body Moisturizer) and you’ll find jojoba esters in many of our creations.

Creams – one product to do it all!

If your skin needs both hydration and moisture, a cream could be just what you need. Creams often combine moisturizers with moisturizers so you get the best of both worlds.

Here at Woohoo, we have a few different face creams, all with different levels of oil content to suit the moisturizing needs of all skin types. Here they are in order from richest to lightest:

  1. Extra Rich Beauty Cream ‘Sweet Dreams’ – more moisturizing, better for dry skin
  2. ‘Over the Moon’ Rich Repair Cream – very moisturizing, great for normal, dry and combination skin
  3. “Perfectly Happy” Light Vitamin C Cream – light moisturizer, ideal for combination skin
  4. “Make My Day” Bio-Retinol Gel Cream. – lighter moisture, a dream for oily skin
What kind of moisturizer do I need?

What about facial oils?

Facial oils are another key player in the skin care game that deserves a mention. They are often packed with emollients that soften and soften the skin, strengthening its natural barrier. However, it is important to note that facial oils usually do not provide hydration. They don’t have the water-attracting humectants found in moisturizers. So while they can lock in moisture and keep your skin soft, they’re no substitute for a good moisturizer or cream. Instead, you can apply your serum or cream first and then seal in the goodness with your face oil.
