Stress is one of the leading causes of mental illness. Having occasional feelings of anxiety is normal, but when it becomes frequent, it creates a disturbance and becomes dangerous to your health. Anxiety disorder puts your body under intense stress, which can reduce your lifespan by 2.8 years.

In the US, 6.8 million adults, i.e. 3.1% of the populationthey suffer from stress orders and the numbers continue to rise.

Stress doesn’t kill, but it can attract serious mental and physical illnesses that can shorten your life. But you may ask, how does one deal with stress in this modern age where demands are high?

In this article, we will look at healthy ways to deal with stress.

10 Healthy Ways to Cope with Stress

One of the best things you can learn is how to deal with stress the right way. Below are some healthy ways to help you deal with stress.

1. Identify the cause and come to terms with it

You can only manage stress when you have identified the cause. If you haven’t come to terms with the cause, you’ll keep running without hitting the nail on the head.

Take some time to think about recent events, changes, or stressors in your life that may be contributing to your anxiety.

Below are some possible causes of stress.

  • family – divorce, spousal abuse, neglect or relationship difficulties,
  • work – undue pressure at work, unemployment or toxic work environment
  • financial problems – unpaid bills and mortgages or debts
  • health – illness, death or injury
  • difficult past experiences – bullying, abuse or neglect.

These are just some of the possible causes. Identifying the cause can give you a sense of control and direction, helping you deal with the issue more effectively.

Whatever the cause, come to terms with it. How can you make peace with them? Keeping a positive mindset as you walk towards her is one of the best ways to make peace with her.

Be positive about it and don’t overthink it. You can also consult a therapist for help and guidance.

2. Maintain a physically active life

Exercise is a powerful stress reliever. It helps keep you healthy and brightens your mood and brain cells.

You are less likely to feel anxious when your mood is always light.

Find activities you enjoy to make it easier to stick with them. Set small, achievable fitness goals and gradually increase your activity level.

Consider joining a local gym or fitness class for added motivation and social interaction. Even a short daily walk can make a significant difference.

3. Get enough sleep

New research has shown that insomnia can increase the risk of anxiety by 30%.

One of the healthy ways to deal with stress is to make sleep a priority. Sleep for at least eight hours daily to maintain a healthy life.

If you have trouble sleeping, you can try healthy ways to sleep.

Avoid caffeine and electronics before bed as they can interfere with your sleep. Create a comfortable sleep environment—dark, quiet, and cool.

Consider relaxation techniques such as reading, listening to relaxing music, or taking a warm bath before bed.

4. Stay away from alcohol and recreational drugs

Research has shown that long-term use of alcohol and recreational drugs can worsen stress levels.

Removing these substances is one of the healthy ways to deal with stress. If you are already addicted to them, see your doctor for guidance on how to quit smoking.

Meditation is another great way to deal with stress.

Healthy food helps with stress, but should never be used as a substitute for medication. Foods like chamomile and salmon are beneficial for reducing stress.

Other foods that are good for stress are green tea, avocado, turmeric, yogurt, dark chocolate, blueberries and almonds. In general, eat lots of fruits and vegetables.

Plan balanced meals and snacks that include a variety of these foods. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Avoid excess sugar and processed foods, which can negatively affect your mood and energy levels.

7. Learn about your anxiety disorder

You cannot effectively treat anxiety disorder without knowing it. Book a session with your doctor a therapist and talk to him.

You will be listened to, diagnosed and given medication. You will also be informed about what to do and what not to do.

8. Identify the triggers

Find out what actions or situations trigger your anxiety and talk to your doctor or therapist about it.

Always be wary of them and develop a plan to stay away from them and a plan of action to do when they appear.

9. Stick to your treatment

Take medication as directed by your doctor. Consistent treatment is vital to effective stress management.

Set reminders for your medications to make sure you take them on time. Keep a calendar of your appointments and prioritize attending them.

Keep your therapy appointments and complete any assignments your therapist has given you.

This will help you make a positive change in your health.

10. Socialize with friends and family

Socialization with your friends and family has been shown to increase an anxiety-reducing hormone and help you cope better with stress.

Never stay away from your loved ones when you have an anxiety disorder.

Social interaction can increase hormones such as oxytocin, which help reduce stress and promote feelings of well-being.

You can schedule regular social activities, even if it’s just a coffee date or a walk with a friend. Contact your friends and family regularly, even if it’s just a quick text or phone call.

Participate in community events or volunteer to meet new people and stay engaged.
