When I started Sanity DailyI just wanted to heal through words and make my readers feel less alone. What started as a mental health blog gradually became a place for women, especially single mothers, to find hope, comfort and validation. As the community grew, I began to notice a recurring theme in their stories: emotional exhaustion closely tied to economic instability and lack of opportunity. No words could ease the pain and calm the chaos in the mind. This observation eventually evolved into my current research on University of Strathclydewhere I research it socio-economic development of single mothers in marginalized…
Perimenopausethe stage of reproductive change for cisgender women that occurs in the years leading up to full menopause can occur even earlier than expected and, as we now know, in many surprising, confusing ways. Most women are well aware that one day they’ll have to deal with hot flashes, night sweats and weight gain as their body’s estrogen production declines, but the real shock comes when perimenopausal women, often only in their 30s or early 40s, see these symptoms accompanied by thinning hair and sagging skin before they hit the big 5-0. If you’re already noticing other perimenopausal changes, such…
When I was a kid, my mom would buy me and my brother a chocolate calendar every December. I would open the small door on December 1st, eat the chocolate, and then proceed to drive her crazy by asking when I could open the next door. (Usually after talking to my brother about his chocolate.) I was like a little chocolate addict trying to negotiate my next fix and I would have definitely failed that delaying gratification marshmallow test as a kid immediately. So when I had kids, I set out to find calendars that created a fun daily “countdown to…
Share gift guide ideas for your mom, grandma, aunt, SIL, maid of honor, or yourself! Okay friends, Halloween is over, which means the holiday season is officially here. I’m so ready for this! Bring the family fun, delicious food and festive parties. As for the gift, I try to recover as quickly as possible. I say this every year… but this year I mean it. I also tried to start early to allocate some of the expenses so it wasn’t a total snowball in December. My goal is to have everything ordered by Cyber Monday, wrapped up that week, and…
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performed within five minutes of a child’s heart stopping nearly doubled their chances of survival, according to preliminary research to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Resuscitation Science Symposium 2025. The meeting will be held Nov. 8-9 in New Orleans and will feature the latest advances in the treatment of cardiovascular injuries and life trauma. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart’s electrical system suddenly malfunctions and stops pumping blood to the rest of the body, resulting in loss of blood to the brain, lungs, and other vital organs. CPR for children consists of cycles of 30…
It’s October Eczema Awareness Month. If your childhood memories include miserable scratching at your itchy skin while an adult gently scolded you to stop or make it worse, you’re not alone. More than 9.6 million children in the United States are affected by atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes red, itchy patches all over the body. The most common type of eczema, AD often begins before the age of 5 years — and about a third of kids who have it hit with a moderate to severe case. Caring for children with AD can be difficult for…
Let’s start with the basics—because who doesn’t like a little theory with their morning coffee? What is self-objectification?At its core, sexual objectification occurs when one’s body (or body parts) is treated as if it exists independently of the rest of the person. Think: body, no personality. While this review focuses primarily on women, let’s be clear: objectification does not discriminate. It can (and does) affect people of all genders, especially those with marginalized identities. You’ve probably heard of it male gazea kind of sexual objectification that frames women as passive objects of desire. At the extreme, objectification can include assault, harassment, and…
A new study published in Neuropharmacology by researchers at Texas A&M University sheds light on how even moderate exposure to alcohol during pregnancy can cause long-lasting changes in the offspring’s brain, especially in brain cells responsible for learning, adaptability and self-control. Key conclusions: Alcohol exposure during pregnancy can reduce and damage key brain cells (CIN) responsible for adaptability and self-control. These brain changes persist into adulthood, leading to problems with learning, flexibility and compulsive behavior. Cholinergic signaling – and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine – play a central role in these effects. No amount of alcohol during pregnancy is proven safe, and…
IMO, Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year… at least when it comes to food. It’s all too common, however, to enjoy your feast only to regret your choices when the bloat, fog and discomfort set in with a vengeance. “Thanksgiving is often thought of as a day to binge on high-carb foods and desserts—essentially an all-day eating event,” she says. Kaitlin Hippley, M.Ed, RDN, LD, CDCESregistered dietitian and certified diabetes educator in Cleveland, Ohio. “But when we start seeing Thanksgiving as just another meal, it becomes easier to make thoughtful, nutritious choices that leave us feeling satisfied rather…
A few weekends ago I was in London teaching a workshop with my friend Luke Worthington. We had a group of 35 trainers from across the UK (and Europe) keen to learn more about assessment, program design, coaching joint strength movements and how I rank the Bourne films. One of the main umbrella themes we kept coming home to was that, contrary to popular belief, “tight” hamstrings aren’t really a thing.Labeling hamstrings as “tight” is often the default scapegoat and is blamed for everything from butt wink to lower back pain in male pattern baldness. So it was no surprise to see…
