As you get older, your organs gradually begin to become less efficient. Your heart is no exception to this, weakening and losing its rigidity over time. Especially when not taken care of properly.

In fact, in the United States, heart disease is the number one leading cause of deathwhich accounts for 1 in 5 deaths in 2021. This affects all types of people, regardless of their ethnicity, gender and background.

The reason for the widespread prevalence of heart disease can be traced to a common denominator: poor lifestyle choices.

From eating fatty, fried foods to being stuck on your couch most of the day, there are many ways you’re silently but surely setting the stage for poor heart health later in life.

In some cases, it may be too late to clean up your past habits. Heart attacks, high blood pressure and strokes can all affect you and cause you to stay in hospital for a long time. And surviving it is considered a good result.

That being said, regardless of whether you currently suffer from heart problems or not, it is imperative that you take care of your heart health. This can be achieved by doing a combination of multiple positive habits and receiving medical treatment.

Let’s look at five effective ways you can improve men’s heart health.

1. Engage in regular physical activity

To improve your heart health, make sure you set aside some time in your day to engage in some physical activity. Three activity sessions totaling 150 minutes it’s generally a good start.

Cardiovascular activities are the best way to maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle. This includes jogging, cycling, exercising and swimming.

That said, if you’re not as strong as you were in your youth, you can get away with light exercise like brisk walking, yoga, and light swimming.

2. Eat a heart-healthy diet

Eat a heart-healthy diet

Food is essential for our survival and it is important to eat a healthy diet if you want to keep your heart healthy.

In general, you want to eat a balanced meal that has ample amounts of heart-healthy nutrients. Foods rich in omega-3, CoQ10 and magnesium are generally a good start.

If you need some advice on what types of food to eat, here is a good list of food types to choose from:

  • Fatty fish such as salmon
  • Lean meat and healthy fats
  • Nuts like walnuts
  • Wholegrain
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Olive oil
  • Black chocolate

By eating these foods (or incorporating them into a healthy diet), you can reduce your risk of having a heart attack or heart disease risk factors early in life.

Make sure you also eat regular portions so you can reduce your belly fat and maintain a healthy weight.

3. Quit smoking

Smoking has it has been proven for a long time to be the largest independent cause of coronary heart disease.

This is because it damages the heart and circulatory system in many ways, namely:

  • It destroys the inner lining of blood vessels
  • It makes the blood sticky and more prone to clotting
  • It increases the levels of triglycerides in the blood
  • It interferes with the ability of blood vessels to dilate properly

Having said all this, it is important to curb your smoking habits as soon as possible. You can start by gradually reducing the number of sticks you burn each day.

You can also use prescription drugs such as nicotine patches and lozenges to control your cravings.

4. Avoid excessive drinking

If you enjoy a glass of red wine a few times a week, that’s fine and dandy. This drink is good for you thanks to its abundance of antioxidants and healthy polyphenols, which can play a role reduction in cardiac mortality.

However, there is a lot of alcohol. And if you overdo it with your binge drinking sessions, your health will suffer the consequences.

Just like smoking, drinking alcohol can cause your breathing to slow down and your blood vessels to dilate. This makes blood flow more inefficient, causing your heart to pump faster than it should. When this happens, it is considered alcohol-induced cardiomyopathy.

Drinking too much alcohol can also leave you at increased risk of developing other heart conditions, such as strokes and heart failure. Therefore, be sure to limit your alcohol consumption to just one glass of red wine at night. Anything else and you could damage your heart.

5. Get enough sleep

Do you always find yourself tossing and turning at night? Do you find your wake up time too short and sacrifice your sleep hours in the process?

If so, you better be careful. Sleep deprivation can affect your body’s ability to fully recover from the previous day’s activities.

Sleep helps regulate blood pressure and heart rate, and if you don’t get enough of it, your heart can develop hypertension and an increased heart rate later, further increasing the risk of damage.

Sleep also lowers cortisol levels, and too much cortisol can increase heart damage.

Many experts suggest that adults should have at least 7 hours of sleep One night. This gives your body enough time to regenerate and recover from the previous day’s activities. Make sure you sleep in a cool, dry environment that is free of distractions.
