Svadhyaya requires us to reason not only our own motivations and behaviours, but also our desires and passions. Inevitably, we come to the question: “What would make life more fulfilling?” For some practitioners, the answer to this question involves teaching yoga.

Moving from yoga student to yoga teacher

If you are thinking about becoming a yoga teacher, I will you want to take some time to think about the following questions:

  • Why do I do yoga?

  • Why do I want to teach yoga?

  • What talents and skills I already have possess that will serve me well as a yoga teacher and what skills do I need to develop?

It’s possible that your answers to these questions will change over time, and that’s okay fine. T. Krishnamachari was undoubtedly it the most influential yoga teacher of the 20u century. TKV’s son Desikacharits founder Vini Yoga and its author The Heart of Yoga: Development a Staff Practice, reminds us that every yoga teacher has something unique to offer. “Yoga is creation. I know the way you teach will be different form the way I teach and the way I teach is different from the way my father taught. We all have different experiences, different backgroundsdifferent views on yoga and why it is important to us.”

Historically, yoga teachers have evolved over time. The first yoga teachers in India were long-term students who studied and practiced under a teacher for years, often decades. Education included not only his study and practice asana (yoga poses), but also ancient yoga texts and pranayama (conscious breathing). Swami Vivekananda is credited with bringing yoga to West during his presentation at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. Over the next several years, he traveled the US lecturing on yoga philosophy. Yoga continued to grow in popularity in the US over the next hundred years.

In the mid-1990s, several yoga teachers began to discuss a possible need to develop yoga teaching standards. Yoga Alliance it was formal established in 1999 after a meeting at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, Mass. Yoga Alliance is the largest nonprofit yoga association in the U.S. Its mission is multifaceted, but Yoga Alliance is maybe the best known for its voluntary teacher registry. All yoga teachers who choose to join Yoga Alliance have completed at least 200 hours training through a Registered Yoga School (RYS). The organization supports diversity in both teaching methods and yoga styles. however, always RYS must include curriculum in the following five educational categories.

  1. Teaching methodology: During methodology lectures, trainees learn about school student communication skills, teaching style, the qualities of a good teacher, and team dynamics.
