I hosted a podcast called Health Matters where I interviewed leading health experts. Believing that Bible study and prayer are to the spirit what healthy eating and exercise are to the body, I asked each expert for a “quick tip” on the four disciplines of Bible study, exercise, healthy diet and prayer.

I share excerpts from interviews with leading health experts about healthy eating.

  1. “One of the benefits of a healthy diet is the psychological stimulation This comes from knowing that we are doing something good for ourselves. Even before we see results, eating healthy is good for us.” ~Steph Beth Nickell
  2. “If you find yourself really breaking the boundaries of not eating cookies (or other unhealthy foods), it’s easier to give them up completely for one season. It’s not like you have to give up forever.”
    ~Barb Raveling
  3. “I’m all for balance — proteins, carbohydrates and fats. I’m not the type to stay away from carbs. You know, I’m not going to exaggerate either. But our body, our brain, needs our first source of energy as carbohydrates. You know as well as I do that Doritos aren’t your best source of carbs. And sugar and ice cream are not the best source of carbohydrates. Many times people already know what to do or not to do. So healthy and clean, again, consistency.” ~Rusty Nokes
  4. “My quick tip for healthy eating is to go green. Look for ways to add green foods, whether it’s darker in your salads, adding greens to a smoothie or pureeing some and adding them to your family’s favorite dishes you’re already eating.” ~Rachel Almstead
  5. “To eat healthy, think colorful meals. Really fill your plate with colorful foods. I also suggest serving two or three vegetables at dinner instead of just one traditional vegetable.” ~Jennifer Waddle
  6. “Make changes one at a time. One of the main things you can do is add fruits and vegetables to every meal. It is very important to have fruits and vegetables. Everyone knows this. Just add a banana, an orange and a cup of green beans to your day. And it will also help fill you up.” ~Brenda Wood
  7. “For me, smoothies it was a huge help and you can always keep the ingredients in your freezer whether it’s frozen fruit or ground flax seeds. Smoothies can really help give you some of the most nutrients you can get in a small sitting. And it’s fast. You just throw this stuff in your blender and blend it.” ~CJ Hitz
  8. “Stop counting calories, eat in moderation. Watch what you’ve been eating and then cut it in half. This is one, cut in half what you ate.” ~Renee Wiggins
  9. “The quick tip for eating healthy is to understand your sugar consumption. It’s everywhere and hard to escape. And many people don’t realize how much sugar they’re actually consuming. There’s a lot of added sugar in most of the grocery items you can buy, so it’s important for everyone to understand their sugars.” ~John Hayden
  10. “The quick tip is to plan. Sure, you have to plan what you’re going to eat. If you know you’re going to eat, you have to see it — go online and find out what the menu is and find out what the numbers are and what you can order.” ~ Sabrina Memminger
  11. “Bring something with you this is healthy. Because as we are busy and in life, we will always need something to eat and the first thing we see is the first thing we grab, so we have to plan. Put together your little lunch bag, your little snack bag, throw in some apples and some nuts and you’re good to go.” ~ Sabrina Memminger
  12. “I promise you that God wants to be involved in your health and wellness. If you begin to depart from the wisdom of the world and begin to ask God what your diet should be like, I promise it will speak to you and lead you to the path you need to follow. And take some time to sit down with a journal and a pen and your Bible and ask the Lord what your diet plan should be. I promise he will answer you.” ~Lori Graves
  13. “I think the best thing anyone can do is add a healthy thing in their lives. A healthy food or a healthy thing that is positive in their life and beyond remove a negative. When you do something like that, it’s on a smaller scale and then over a year you’ve added five or six healthy things and you take away five or six unhealthy things and it’s something that can be done.” ~Summer Breskov
  14. “Eat more sensibly. We all understand very well what is good and what is bad food and usually the bad food is the one that tastes the best. So enjoy life, enjoy the food but be sensible. Having dessert every night is probably not the best thing to do. You have to make sure you eat really well during the week, but on the weekend you can treat yourself and enjoy that dessert, have what you love but moderation it’s always good.” ~Nicole Swiner
  15. “If it comes in a box, don’t eat it. God didn’t make it in a box. Eat your food closer to the form God made it.” ~Liz Faison
  16. “I always say, ‘if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.’ So watch what you eat. Take your time, write it down, plug it into one of the many apps available, but you have to watch what you eat to stay healthy.” ~Cathy Morenzie
  17. “If you are able to act quickly smoothies or a green smoothie or a shake really packed with vitamins and minerals and nutrients that you need, I’ve found those to be the best and the healthiest, especially for breakfast.” ~Aggelos Barino
  18. “I start a checklist which I check every day. I didn’t do this, or I did that. I planned ahead or ate this instead of that. Because there’s something in seeing that you checked it out, and you’re much more likely to do it if you have that responsibility with yourself. And you’re more likely to stick with it than, “well, I messed up today, I could mess up again tomorrow.” ~Kimberly Rae
  19. “Familiarity with your body’s signals for hunger and satisfaction will be extremely useful. Fuel your body when you are physically hungry, then stop fueling it when you are physically satisfied. It is amazing how efficiently God has made our bodies. It doesn’t need a lot of food. We are fearfully and wonderfully made.” ~Heidi Bylsma
  20. “When it comes to healthy eating, make sustainable changes in your life as you go along. Diets won’t work if you’re not going to eat this way for the rest of your life. Basically, whatever change you decide to make, make small incremental changes because that change will be sustainable throughout your life. And with time you will see results.” ~Linda Williams
  21. “One of the simplest things I try to do is add greens. It’s that simple. Instead of trying to figure out what to cut out or what other types of specific foods to add, just add greens to every meal. Whether that’s spinach or romaine or whatever, just try to add greens to as many meals as you can throughout the day. Because it is the greens that will help alkalize the body. That would be my simple advice for people out there. Just add greens to your meals.” ~Adam Luckey
  22. “Make a list of all the whole foods you like, like apples or eggs or chicken. And then create recipes of these very simple foods. It’s a great way to start your clean eating lifestyle.” ~Julie Indl

Although the podcast is no longer available, if you would like a copy of any of the full transcripts of the interview, please email me.

This was an excerpt from the Health Matters Podcast, believing that prayer and Bible study are to the spirit what exercise and healthy eating are to the body.

Blessings on your journey to health.
