Washington, DC — October 2023 — The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI), the leading national nonprofit dedicated to the health and well-being of Black women and girls, is proud to announce the appointment of Barbara J. Brown, PhD , as its new President of the Board of Directors, effective October 14u2023. Dr. Brown succeeds the Honorable Dr. Angela Marshall, who served with unwavering dedication for 6 years.

Dr. Barbara J. Brown is a licensed clinical psychologist who has devoted more than 30 years to improving the mental health of individuals, families, and communities through direct service, education, program development, and as a serial entrepreneur in the field of mental health and wellness. As a subject matter expert, Dr. Brown is a frequent public speaker and author on various mental health topics and argues that what is perceived as abnormal behavior is often a normal response to an abnormal situation. He believes that the accurate attribution of bio-psycho-social determinants within a cultural context is the key to destigmatization and fair treatment of psychological problems. Dr. Brown is a strong proponent of routine mental health screening at all developmental stages to provide early intervention and ameliorate the current mental health crisis.

Dr. Brown is the Founder/CEO/Owner of CapitolHill Consortium for Counseling & Consulting, LLC (www.ccccmentalhealth.com) and Unicorn Health Care, LLC (www.unicornhealthcare.com) in the Washington DC area. Collectively, the sister services employ over 60 therapists who provide psychotherapy, psychological assessment and testing for children, adolescents and adults, as well as community and company-based coaching, counselling, workshops and wellness retreats. She has been honored as a Top 100 MBE Business by the Capital Minority Supplier Development Council, Businesswomen of the Year, EY Entrepreneur Access Network Cohort, Inc 5000 Fastest Growing US Companies, and is certified by WBENC and WOSB.

Dr. Brown serves the greater community in national organizations including the Black Women’s Health Imperative (Board Chair), the Boris L. Henson Foundation (Advisory Board), the BOW Collective (Founding Member), WEW (Member), Enterprising Women (Advisory Board ), Women Business Collaborative (Advisory Board), and local organizations including the Episcopal Children’s Center (Board Member) and the Washington DC Chapter of the Links, Incorporated (Co-Chair Health & Human Services Facet).

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Barbara J. Brown as the new Board Chair of the Black Women’s Health Imperative,” said Linda Goler Blount, MPH, President of BWHI. “Dr. Brown’s ability to integrate mental health into the conversation and commitment to responsive and equitable treatment will undoubtedly strengthen our efforts to improve the health and wellness of Black women and girls nationally.”

Dr. Angela Marshall, the outgoing Board Chair, has been instrumental in the growth and impact of BWHI over the years. Her dedication and tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on the organization and her service will always be appreciated and remembered.

“The Extraordinary Years of Dr. Angela Marshall Leadership has been instrumental in shaping the Black Women’s Health Check into the formidable force it is today,” said Dr. Barbara J. Brown. “It is an honor to follow in her footsteps and build on her legacy. Together with the BWHI team, I am committed to continuing the critical work to improve the health and well-being of Black women and girls across the nation.”

The Black Women’s Health Imperative looks forward to a promising future under the leadership of Dr. Barbara J. Brown and all members of her dedicated Board of Directors.
