The Nutrition Network has introduced a new online training program, “Exercise for the Treatment and Prevention of Disease.” This training is designed to provide health care providers, fitness instructors, and the general public with the knowledge and tools necessary to incorporate exercise as a central component in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease.

A Transformative Approach

The training program begins with fundamental concepts such as cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and exercise capacity, progressing to advanced topics such as individualized exercise prescription, integration of exercise with medication management, and strategies for addressing diverse patient populations. Through evidence-based strategies, hands-on case studies, and interactive learning, participants will be equipped to apply these concepts to their clinical practice.

Special Lecturers share information

The training includes contributions from leading experts in medicine, exercise science and health coaching:

  • Peter Cummings, MHP, NNPMetabolic Health Practitioner and Certified Nutrition Network Practitioner, emphasizes the importance of CRF and exercise capacity as vital points in clinical practice. “We intend to revolutionize the way healthcare providers view exercise, not just as a supplemental recommendation but as a cornerstone of patient care,” said Cummings.
  • Dr. Laurie RauchAssistant Lecturer in Exercise Neurobiology and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town, he explores the science of cardiorespiratory fitness, providing a detailed understanding of how to assess and enhance CRF in patients. “Cardiorespiratory fitness is the best predictor of morbidity, quality of life and mortality. There appears to be no upper limit to the benefits that improved CRF provides,” said Dr. Rauch.
  • Mark Cucuzzella, MD, MHPA professor at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, he discusses exercise as medicine, emphasizing its practical applications in clinical settings. “Exercise is a powerful therapeutic tool that, when properly prescribed, can lead to significant improvements in patient health outcomes,” noted Cucuzzella.

Education Objectives

The program is designed to help healthcare professionals:

  • Understanding the role of CRF and mobility in patient health.
  • Develop personalized exercise prescriptions tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Integrate exercise into comprehensive patient care plans, including medication management considerations.
  • Apply motivational interviewing techniques to enhance patient participation.
  • Tailor exercise prescriptions for special populations, ensuring safe and effective results.

Who should attend?

This training is intended for health care providers, including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and fitness professionals who work in clinical settings. Whether new to prescription exercise or looking to strengthen existing skills, participants will gain valuable insight into the use of exercise as a preventive and therapeutic intervention.

Partnership

This training has been developed in collaboration with Peter Cummings, MPH, NNPpreventive health expert with over 30 years of experience, specializing in therapeutic carb reduction and human performance. He has authored peer-reviewed articles in American Journal of Preventive Medicine – FOCUScontributing significantly to the integration of lifestyle interventions into chronic disease management.

Peter emphasizes the importance of individualized exercise, nutrition and lifestyle strategies for optimal health outcomes. As an endurance sports mentor and coach with numerous championship successes, his holistic, data-driven approach challenges the conventional reliance on medication. This upcoming exercise training will equip health professionals and lay people with practical tools to prioritize sustainable, holistic health solutions.
