MEAL PREP MADE EASY: Healthy Strategies and Time Savings

Women working in India today face various challenges when they manage their professional life and their family at work and back home. The sole responsibility for fulfilling their needs and maintain the health of the whole family lies in the woman in the house. Managing time and resources in the best possible way to maintain the health and nutrition needs of all is prioritized. Meal Prep properly saves most of the precious time, money and energy with the primary purpose of maintaining a healthier lifestyle.

As a nutritionist, I have developed some simple tips on managing time and maintaining lower nutritional requirements. I hope to help.

1) Adjust a proper kitchen space so, not only save time, but the meal preparation becomes easy and convenient. You have utensils/tools in limited quantities to use what is required. More equipment takes up more space and creates clutter in the kitchen, creating stress while working. Use special spaces/cabinets/shelves for specific items and stack grocery stores.

2) You have weekly meal plans to help you with grocery shopping. To make healthy, nutritious meals, make sure you include all the big food groups in meal designs. Try to create a rotation in meal preparation to keep people bored of the same old food. Try new recipes on weekends, so there is no need to go out/order food from abroad. Take the slogans from children/family members for what they want to eat and prepare accordingly to avoid eating unwanted foods from abroad.

3) Create and organize a list of groceries online or manually to highlight the products that need to be redefined by the end of the month. Only buy items that are sure you are using or lying in cabinets.

Make sure you also use online gates for daily grocery stores, such as milk/bread, seasonal vegetables/fruits, etc. An advantage of these sites is that sometimes you buy things at cheaper prices due to offers, time saving and energy.

4) In traditional Indian households, we have seen many meal preparations that have been shown to be the best ways to maintain and use fresh ingredients for longer duration and that have brilliant pharmaceutical values and uses and also save time. For example, pickling helps maintain fruits/vegetables or even meats for months together, which also have huge health benefits.

Gulkhands, jams, murabba, cheeses, fermented foods, etc., take some time to prepare, but they can be used daily. Parathas and pickles are an example we all know.

5) Use your weekends/weekly offs to prepare for next week. Clean and chop vegetables, green leafy vegetables, etc. that take longer. For example, bulk ginger-garage paste and store chopped onions/tomatoes, classified mint, coriander, green, etc., it is an additional time when cooking. All this can be stored in the refrigerator and can be used immediately. These tiny tricks help save your time during cooking during business days.

6) Also here, you will avoid instant/ready to use/cooked foods that could be healthier. Always use fresh meats/dairy products/fruits and vegetables instead of canned/packaged/preserved/processed foods to avoid health complications.

7) Use healthy eating options for snack purposes. Try to include seeds, nuts, dried fruits, yogurts and fruit juices instead of packaged and processed snacks. Try to include traditional foods as a healthier snack, such as Chana Jor Moong Jor, grilled peanuts, etc. And they make children use them.

8) Try creating your spices. Buy fresh/dry ingredients and process them further at home instead of buying them from the stores. This is more economical and healthier. These things can be done in huge quantities and these spices last up to six months or more.

9) Waste Management: You must help maintain cleanliness- have a girl or do it yourself. Use separate dust bins for liquid and dry waste. Make sure others at home follow the same rules. Keep a separate bowl for kitchen waste while cooking time.

To summarize, we must use our available resources wisely to achieve optimum health and prosperity for our family and maintain our productivity at work with effective meal preparation strategies.
