Let’s talk about how to do a detox cleanse the right way. Because there is a lot of misinformation out there about what detox really is and what it should aim to achieve. Honestly, most of the detox advice you find online is silly at best and dangerous at worst. As a Triple Board Certified Gynecologist, I’m here to set the record straight.
There are three main things a proper detox cleanse should target – your blood sugar, your liver and your gut health.
Let’s talk about why these three things are so important and how to do a natural detox
#1 Blood Sugar: How to Do a Keto Detox
After the holidays or any time in your life where you’ve indulged a little more than usual, it’s only natural to feel like you need to reset, detox and help rejuvenates the body.
One of the biggest questions to ask at this point is How do I detox from sugar?
Because so often, it’s sugar that’s causing your cravings. And your brain fog. And your weight gain.

#2 How do you detox your liver?
The second thing you really need to focus on when considering a detox is your liver. Your liver does a ton of heavy lifting for your body’s natural detoxification pathways on a daily basis. It metabolizes your hormones, any medications you take, and fat-soluble vitamins. (1)
And while the liver is a very powerful organ, it can get “backed up” when it’s forced to metabolize too much. This can happen because of weight gain, obesity, or type 2 diabetes. In fact, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has become so common that it’s estimated that a full quarter or more of the adult population in the U.S. is affected by it—and it’s only expected to worsened. The problem is that there are many potentially dangerous “liver detox” products out there. You have to be very careful with any product that claims it can detox your liver ASAP.
So, how do you cleanse the liver naturally?
Very carefully and gently. The key thing to adopt here is the idea of supporting the liver. Giving your liver what it needs to thrive without being overweight requires a special kind of balance.
And when it comes to liver support, there’s no doubt about the mighty detox benefits of thistle. Milk thistle has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and has been used for centuries to support liver function. (5)

#3 How to do a gut health cleanse
When it comes to your weight, your mood, your immune system, and pretty much the health of your entire body, your gut microbiome is a key player. Seriously, your gut health affects everything.
But keeping your gut happy isn’t always simple. Modern diets full of processed foods lack the nutrients and fiber that help these gut microbes thrive.
And unfortunately, taking probiotics every day while still eating junk food and eating tons of sugar isn’t really enough to keep your gut health in good shape.
What your gut really needs to thrive is an abundance of fiber, which you get from eating many different kinds of vegetables. This creates what we call gut microbiome diversity. And this “diversity” is one of the key things that the longest-lived among us tend to have. Studies consistently show that the healthier a population is, the more diverse the microbes in its gut. Do not forget: Food for Detoxification
Many detox and cleanse products suggest that you should cut out food when you cleanse.
I think this is unwise and impractical.
