Understanding Pests: Symptoms, How to Avoid Them, and Natural Solutions

By: Megan Barefoot

First off, I don’t want people to panic, but I’ve seen quite a few posts on social media talking about parasites and I thought I’d clear things up as much as I can. Parasites are organisms that live in or on another organism (the host) and derive nutrients at the expense of the host. While the thought of pests may conjure up images of tropical diseases, these unwelcome visitors can and do affect people around the world, even right here at home. I believe it is important for everyone to understand the symptoms of parasites and take a few simple steps to begin treating them for better health.

Common symptoms of parasites

There are a few ways you can begin to recognize the signs that you have parasites in your body. This can be difficult, as symptoms often overlap with other health problems. However, some common symptoms to look out for include:

  1. Digestive problems: I talk to a lot of people who have chronic problems with their gut health but are told that everything “looks” normal. Chronic diarrhea, constipation, gas, or bloating can be a sign of parasites disrupting your digestive system.

  2. Fatigue and weakness: Do you struggle to find energy even when you feel like you’ve had a good night’s sleep? Parasites can deplete your body of essential nutrients, leading to persistent fatigue and general weakness.

  3. Unexplained weight changes: Despite maintaining or increasing your food intake, having parasites can cause unexpected weight changes as they consume nutrients meant for your body. This can have severe cravings for less than healthy foods or a complete loss of appetite at times.

  4. Skin problems: Rashes, eczema, hives and other skin irritations can be the result of toxins released by parasites. Having personally dealt with skin issues throughout my life, I can attest to the power of a parasite cleanse to clear the skin.

  5. Sleep Disorders: Parasites can contribute to issues such as insomnia, teeth grinding (bruxism) and disruptions to your sleep cycle. Do you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep, but other factors like stress shouldn’t be a factor in your case?

  6. Mood and behavior changes: Anxious moods, feeling depressed and mood swings can sometimes be traced back to parasitic infections, which can affect the central nervous system. I’ve talked many times about the connection to gut health, a strong microbiome, and mental well-being. Parasites disrupt the neurotransmitters we need to feel better.

  7. Pain in joints and muscles: Some parasites can migrate to different areas of the body, leading to pain and inflammation in the joints and muscles. Feeling aches and pains without having done any hard work can be a sign that there is more going on in your body.

How parasites enter the body

Parasites can enter the body in a number of ways, including:

  • Contaminated water or food

  • Infected insects or animals (Do you have pets?)

  • Poor hygiene practices

  • Traveling to areas with a high prevalence of parasites

How can you reduce the chances of getting a parasite?

Avoiding pests can be difficult even in developed parts of the world. Keeping parasites out of your body involves a combination of good hygiene practices and careful eating:

  • Proper food handling: Cook meat properly, wash fruit and vegetables and avoid raw or undercooked seafood.

  • Clean water: Drink filtered or bottled water, especially when traveling to areas with known water contamination problems.

  • Good Hygiene: Wash your hands regularly, especially before meals and after using the toilet. Cleaning the kitchen while cooking and after cooking should be a daily practice!

Natural Solutions and No Shoes Nutrition’s Approach

At No Shoes Nutrition, we believe in holistic and natural approaches to treating health problems, including parasitic issues. Here’s how we can help:

  1. Comprehensive Nutritional Assessment: We will assess your eating habits, lifestyle and symptoms to help identify any parasite symptoms that may be holding you back.

  2. Customized detox plan: We create personalized detox plans that include foods known for their anti-parasitic properties, such as garlic, pumpkin seeds, and papaya seeds.

  3. Supplements: Incorporating supplements can help take your cleanse to the next level.

  4. Gut health support: We focus on restoring gut health with probiotics and prebiotics to boost your body’s natural defenses against parasites. We also help soothe the gut lining and seal a leaky gut that is inflamed due to parasites.

  5. Ongoing Support: Regular follow-ups ensure you stay on track with your detox plan and adjust as needed for optimal results.

Pests can significantly affect your health, but with the right approach, you can eliminate them and restore your well-being.
