S’mores are one of the most essential summer desserts. It’s the perfect camping dessert, along with Skillet Peach Cobbler. But they are also delicious over a fire or even made inside.

The oven heating can be a little too much during the summer. I understand. Someone asked me recently is it safe to roast marshmallows in a gas stove?

Yes, as long as you use your common sense. Marshmallows baked on the stove are delicious (and my favorite! they really come out like campfire marshmallows. But you can also make s’mores in the oven. Either way works.

This is such a delicious and easy dessert for any number of people. Make one (or a pair!) for a serving or more for a crowd. Use the oven if you prefer golden brown marshmallows or the stove if you like them burnt.

I prefer to roast marshmallows on the stove (I prefer burnt marshmallows!), but you can also cook them in the oven, just keep a close eye on them and don’t use a baking mat if your oven is on, it will burn or fall apart.

  • Graham crackers: Graham crackers are a classic s’more ingredient. I personally like the Honey Maid brand better than the generic. You can also use cookies on both sides of your mallow.
  • Marshmallows: Jumbo marshmallows are classic for grilling, but since you’ll be baking them in the oven, use whatever size you already have on hand. Smaller marshmallows will cook faster than larger ones.
  • Chocolate bar: Use your favorite chocolate frames. Choose the ones you will enjoy on their own, such as milk chocolate bar, dark chocolate or white chocolate. Chocolate chips are usually very small and fall off a graham cracker.
  • Optional garnishes: berries, peanut butter cups, banana, swap graham crackers for chocolate chip cookies, Oreos, or other cookies. Once you learn how to make s’mores in the oven, the options are endless.

1. How to make more in the oven: Move the oven rack to the 2nd to the upper level. Set oven to BROIL. Place 2 large marshmallows in a baking pan. Check often. They will only take a few minutes to cook.

You can also place a graham cracker, chocolate, then marshmallow on top and bake the whole thing. I’m less fond of melted chocolate, so I prefer to just cook the marshmallows.

1. You can cook s’mores over an electric stove or gas stove. But I don’t think you could use an inversion stove. Now you’ve learned how to make s’mores in the oven or on the stove.

2. Turn the stove to high, wait until the coils (if electric) become red hot or the flame stabilizes on a gas stove. Roast the marshmallow with a fork on the stove. Bake until desired doneness.

3. Collect placing chocolate and desired toppings on graham cracker halves, top with marshmallow and cover with 2nd graham cracker. Enjoy your meals in the oven.

Storage/Reheating Tips

If you haven’t used all the ingredients for the baked s’mores, store leftover graham crackers, chocolate, unbaked marshmallows, and extra toppings in airtight containers/bags. Cooked marshmallows do not keep wellUnfortunately.

Substitutions/Tips

  • Roast marshmallows on the 2nd highest rack for a golden brown or cook them on the stove (this can work with an electric coil or gas stove) for charred mallows. Depends on you!
  • Check on the marshmallows often because they can burn quickly.
  • If cooking in an oven, hold marshmallow about an inch from flame or coil for a very brown marshmallow, reserve about 2 inches for a slower-baking marshmallow that gets lightly browned.
  • Other great toppings: berries/fruit, banana, peanut butter cups or sandwich your marshmallow between two cookies. Once you learn how to make s’mores in the oven, you’ll be able to experiment with many combinations.

How long does it take to bake marshmallows in the oven?

How to Make S’mores in the Oven (or the Stove!)

Wondering how to make s’mores in the oven? You can make perfect, crunchy marshmallows in the oven or on a gas stove. Cooking food in the oven is easy and takes less than 10 minutes to make.

Cooking time 5 minutes minutes

Components

  • 2 graham crackers
  • 2 large marshmallows
  • 2 squares chocolate bar white, milk, dark etc
  • Optional covers: berries, peanut butter cups, banana, swap graham crackers for chocolate chip cookies

Instructions

  • Move the oven rack to the 2nd to the upper level. Turn on the oven to bake. Adjust all ingredients. Place the marshmallows on a baking sheet covered with baking paper or parchment paper. You can also place graham crackers in the pan, top with chocolate chips and then add marshmallows. This is a good method if you like very melted chocolate in your s’mores.
  • Place the pan in the oven, check in 3 minutes and then again in 5 depending on how long your oven has been preheated. Remove when desired browning.

  • If you are grilling them over your stove, turn the stove on high, wait until the coils (if electric) are red hot, or the flame is steady on a gas stove. Roast the marshmallow with a fork on the stove. Bake until desired doneness.

  • Place chocolate and desired toppings on graham cracker, place marshmallow on top and cover with 2nd graham cracker. Enjoy.

Notes

  • Toast the marshmallows on the 2nd highest rack for a golden brown, or toast them on the stove (this can work with an electric coil or gas stove) for charred marshmallows. Depends on you!
  • Check the marshmallows often because they can burn quickly.
  • If cooking over the stove, hold the marshmallow about an inch from the flame or coil for a very brown marshmallow, hold about 2 inches for a slower-roasting marshmallow that is lightly browned.

Fun Covers:

  1. Berries: Raspberries are my absolute favorite topping, but blueberries and strawberries are also delicious
  2. Banana: take it a step further by roasting your banana. Or just thinly slice to cover your chocolate square. It’s like a banana split but without the melted ice cream.
  3. Chocolate covered peanut butter cups: ok dark chocolate again, Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups are all I need in my life, you can totally use Reese’s cups too. A peanut butter spread is also so great.
  4. BONUS: chocolate chip cookies. Instead of graham crackers, add mallow and fruit to a delicious chocolate chip cookie.
