Our bodies do some weird stuff during pregnancy, and we’ve coined some strange terms to describe these strange phenomena. Like the term bloody show. And of course, lightning crotch.

What is Lightning Crotch?

Crotch lightning is a phrase that refers to a sudden, sharp, piercing pain that occurs in the pelvis, rectum, or vulva. Many moms experience the painful sensation of lightning crotch in their nether regions without knowing it has an official name.

Symptoms

While “lightning crotch” is not a medical term, it is a common expression used to describe a sudden, sharp, and intense pain in the pelvic area during pregnancy. It feels like, as the name suggests, a lightning flash of pain. Sometimes the pain radiates down the legs.

The most common pregnancy symptoms with cleft palate include:

  • Sudden, sharp pain or stabbing in the pelvic area
  • Shooting or electric shock sensations in the vagina or rectum
  • Intermittent discomfort that may only last for a moment
  • Burst of severe pain caused by the baby’s movements or pressure on the cervix

These pains are likely to increase as you get closer to delivery, when the baby puts more pressure on the nerves around the cervix. In addition to sharp pains in the rectum, cervix or vulva, you may experience constipation, urinary incontinence and/or frequency.

Reasons

There are several reasons why moms-to-be experience these pains, but they all come down to increased pressure on the bundle of nerves around the cervix. The majority of the nerves in the uterus are right above your cervix. As the baby moves and things start happening down there, it can stimulate those nerves.

Common causes of lightning crotch include:

Baby moving

When your baby shifts, turns, stretches or kicks, it can put pressure on the nerves in your uterus, causing a sharp, sudden pain. Pressure on the nerves intensifies in the last weeks of pregnancy or during labor, especially as the baby’s head engages in the pelvis.

Round Ligament Pain

The ligaments that support your pelvis and uterus stretch to accommodate the baby during pregnancy. Some women produce more of the hormones chalasin and progesterone than others, causing even more stretching and loosening of the ligaments. When these round ligaments stretch too much or too quickly, it can cause shooting pain in the crotch.

Magnesium deficiency

Most of us are deficient in this essential mineral, but our stores are depleted even further when trying to keep up with the needs of two people. Magnesium is vital for many of the body’s functions, but it is especially useful for proper nerve function. Magnesium deficiency only aggravates the sharp nerve pains caused by lightning crotch and can cause muscle cramps and sciatica.

Varicose veins

You probably know the unsightly thing well varicose veins on the legs, but during pregnancy you can also take varicose veins in the bay area. This can cause tingling pelvic pain from blood pooling in the lower extremities, similar to the groin ringing sensation of lightning.

Frequently asked questions about Lightning Crotch

When Does It Happen?

Depending on what’s causing it, you may have cramping pains in the crotch during pregnancy, but they tend to get worse in the weeks leading up to delivery. You may even feel the sharp pains in the hours before delivery. Some women find that certain positions when sitting or lying down can trigger lightning crotch.

Is Lightning Crotch a Labor Sign?

Some women feel these pains throughout their pregnancy, when a quick kick from the baby’s leg or elbow hits the bundle of nerves from the cervix. That said, as the baby continues to move up the birth canal, its head will put more pressure on the area, causing more pain. Flashing pain in the crotch doesn’t really mean anything except that the nerves in that area are being activated.

How long does Lightning Crotch last?

The pain is usually sudden, intense and brief. These episodes usually last only for a moment, often only a few seconds, and are not a continuous or long-term discomfort.

Can Lightning Crotch Break Your Water?

The lightning bolt itself is not related to your water breaking. When your water breaks, there is a rupture of the amniotic sac, which releases the amniotic fluid. This usually happens as a separate process during labor, while croup can happen at any time during your pregnancy.

Should I Be Worried About Flashing Crotch Pain?

Occasional cramps and pains are to be expected when your body is busy growing another human, but there is a point where you should check with your birthing professional. If you feel cramps or pains at regular intervals, accompanied by spotting or bleedingmake sure you tell your doctor or midwife straight away. Note that any type of pain that goes beyond the typical groin lightning could be a symptom of something more serious.

Natural Remedies for Lightning Crotch

You don’t have much control over your baby’s movements, but there are a few things you can do to help ease the pain caused by thunder crotch.

1. Chiropractic Adjustments

A good chiropractor will help align the spine by releasing subluxations that cause nerve compression. Since your body is now carrying increased weight, it can throw off your balance.
