EnglishOne of the best tools your body has to keep you healthy is your immune system. This fuerza complicada y protectora que se encuentra dentro de ti is designed to locate and destroy enemy cells (things that should not be in the body) stories like viruses, bacteria and sometimes cancer cells. Sin embargo, el cáncer puede ser difícil because some cancer cells learn to hide from the immune system so that they do not identify them as a threat. When this happens, your immune system might not recognize them as enemies and might not attack them as they should.Immunotherapy is…
Teachers made a difference (and it showed)Before we get into week 10, the biggest shout out goes to the OPEX trainers and mentors. This didn’t seem like a typical “educational group running a course” organization. The people who lead the program are also people who run the company and shape the brand. In the first eight weeks we learned with Carl, the CEO of OPEX. This matters. When someone at this level takes the time to teach coaches every week, it sends a clear message of what the company values. Then the last two weeks turned into marketing and sales for fitness…
Scientists and doctors can better evaluate precision genome editing technology using a new method released today by St. John’s Children’s Research Hospital. Jude. Significant time and resources spent on improving CRISPR gene editing technology are focused on identifying small off-target sites that pose a safety risk, which is also technically challenging. The researchers of St. Jude tackled the problem by creating Traffic for high-throughput analysis of genome-wide nuclease effects by sequence-based processors (CHANGE-seq-BE), an unbiased, sensitive and resource-efficient method for finding these off-target changes. It outperformed conventional approaches and has already been used to support clinical work. The technique was…
By tracking how adaptive genes sweep gut bacteria across continents, researchers are uncovering a hidden evolutionary response to modern diets and lifestyles and a powerful new way to study microbiome evolution. Study: Gene-selective scans are pervasive in human gut microbiomes. Image credit: Danijela Maksimovic/Shutterstock.com A recent study in Nature developed a comprehensive linkage disequilibrium score (iLDS), a novel scan selection statistic, to identify adaptive alleles that spread in host microbiomes through recombination-driven processes, including migration and horizontal gene transfer (HGT). This emphasizes common selective pressures and their role in shaping microbiome diversity and function. Genetic adaptations to the gut microbiome…

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) used to be a rare pregnancy condition, but now affects approximately 14,000 pregnancies annually, being a leading cause of maternal death. However, why this happens is still not well understood. Placenta accreta occurs when the placenta grows too deep into the uterine wall and does not detach after birth, often resulting in life-threatening bleeding and the need for a hysterectomy. The strongest and most common risk factor is a previous C-section, as scars from previous C-sections can change the way the placenta attaches in future pregnancies. New research led by UCLA Health suggests that how this…

Gestational diabetes is becoming more common in the United States – and not just slightly. A major new analysis from Northwestern Medicine shows that rates of gestational diabetes rose every year from 2016 to 2024, marking nearly a decade of uninterrupted growth. The study looked at more than 12 million U.S. births and found that gestational diabetes increased 36 percent in nine years, rising from 58 cases per 1,000 births in 2016 to nearly 80 per 1,000 births in 2024. This steady increase is alarming because gestational diabetes affects both pregnancy outcomes and long-term health for parents and children. The…
