When Bianca Freedman entered motherhood, she also became increasingly aware of how everyday parenting choices affect both family well-being and the environment. Becoming a new mom during the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced these thoughts, prompting a shift toward more natural, reusable alternatives. This conscious transition not only transformed her own parenting journey but inspired the creation of Mumma Beara brand based on practical, gentle, sustainable and affordable solutions for modern families.

From Struggles to Solutions: How Mama Bear Got Started

When Bianca became a first-time mom during the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020, she faced the daunting task of preparing for life with her new baby. With in-person shopping limited and a seemingly endless stream of online reviews, comparisons and shipping delays, even the simplest purchase became overwhelming. Add to that the financial challenges of parental leave, and the balance between quality, affordability and accessibility became painfully clear.

At 5 months old, little Bianca developed sensitivities to disposable diapers, and their waste filled almost half the family’s wheelie bin each week. Determined to find a more sustainable and gentle solution, she discovered cloth diapers. But navigating the world of cloth diapers for the first time revealed its own challenges: finding products that balance quality, cost and sustainability. Realizing that many other parents faced similar struggles, Bianca set out to create Mumma Bear, a brand dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality products that Australian families could rely on.

The launch: A family-centric launch

In April 2021, Mumma Bear was born with a small but carefully curated lineup of essentials: cloth diapers, reusable breast pads, wet bags and organic muslin wedges. Each product is rigorously tested and used daily by Bianca’s own family, ensuring it meets the real needs of parents and babies. Over time, as Bianca’s family grew, so did the Mumma Bear line. Today, the brand supports families from pregnancy to infancy with products designed to make life easier and more sustainable.

From the beginning, sustainability has been at the heart of Mumma Bear’s mission. The brand switched from single-use plastic packaging to eco-friendly options that are compostable, biodegradable, reusable or recyclable. This commitment reflects Bianca’s dedication to helping families while protecting the planet.

Listening, Learning and Innovation

One of Mumma Bear’s biggest cornerstones is its customer-first approach. Bianca takes the time to listen to her customers, understand their challenges and create products that make a difference. This thoughtful feedback loop led to the creation of Mumma Bear’s range of self-carewhich supports new mothers who often overlook their own needs.

One of the most popular products in the series is the TGA approved pregnancy and postnatal belly band. Designed for use during pregnancy, post-surgery and postpartum recovery, it is renowned for its comfort, affordability and eligibility for medical discounts. This product perfectly embodies Mumma Bear’s mission to support families with high-quality, accessible solutions.

Participation in the Community

Mumma Bear’s dedication to families extends beyond her store. Bianca and her team are actively involved in the Sydney baby market scene, creating opportunities to connect directly with local families. These events allow them to share their story, build relationships and learn more about community needs.

Plus, Mumma Bear is committed to giving back. The brand collaborates with The Women’s Country Domestic Violence Crisis Centerdonating care packages and funds to support women in crisis. These packs include essentials for both moms and babies, offering a small but essential source of comfort during incredibly challenging times. This community-driven approach is a core part of Mumma Bear’s values and mission.

Overcoming the challenges: Building a trusted brand

Starting a business during a global pandemic was no small feat. Bianca faced a crowded market and the challenge of standing out among competitors. But by building a brand based on trust, care and education, Mumma Bear has created a unique space. It became more than a store; became a community where parents could find guidance, support and products they could rely on.

Another hurdle was bridging the gap between affordability and fast delivery. Bianca understood the frustration of choosing between long shipping times from overseas or high-priced local options. Mumma Bear’s solution was simple but effective: provide affordable, high-quality products with fast delivery to Australian families. This approach has been a game changer for many parents.
