As South Africa celebrates women’s month, new ideas from leading researchers reveal that more women than ever make the transition to healthier drinks, with Rooibos appearing as a leading candidate.

Tea remains a favorite among the South Africans, with Over 22 million adults enjoy a daily cup.

Specifically, women lead this trend, with eighty 20 data showing that other groups are more likely to choose tea, including Rooibos.

A wellness companion

Professor Elmarie Terblanche, a leading researcher from the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch (SU), confirms the trend.

‘Rooibos is more than a traditional herbal tisane – it is A wellness companion for women at every stage of life. Its natural composition without caffeine is aligned with the evolving women’s health priorities, whether they study, increase families or manage age -related health concerns.

A 2023 review published in the Journal of Public Health in Africa found that Rooibos’s interventions in a wide range of age (6-83 years) significantly improved lipid profiles, antioxidant condition and blood glucose control and high risk.

Physical health support

Further research by South African scientists is reinforcing Rooibos’s potential as a natural tool to support overall health.

Professor Jeanine Marnewick, Director of the Applied Institute of Biotechnology of Applied Microbial and Health at the University of Technology of Cape Peninsula (CPUT), has shown through her extensive research that Rooibos is rich in powerful antioxidants that help fight oxidative stress – A key factor in developing many chronic diseases.

Similarly, the SU Biochemistry Professor, SU’s biochemistry professor has identified the unique union of Rooibos, Aspalathin, as beneficial for balancing blood sugar levels and supporting adrenal health health.

Adding to this, research by Professor Christo Muller, head of Specialist in the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), highlights Rooibos’s ability positively affects glucose metabolism and reduces inflammationsuggesting that it can help prevent or manage type 2 diabetes.

Girls (aged 6-12):
