You know the hardest thing about being a single mom is that the role is more demanding than the child? It requires strength, resilience, persistence and a constant commitment to your child. While the rewards are immeasurable, rather priceless, it’s important to recognize the unique challenges single mothers face in their daily lives, and people around think they have it all easy because they don’t have in-laws or a partner. to deal with, to announce the news that the whole world has to face – single.
Being a single mother, I go through this a lot and the pressure is sometimes unavoidable. Raising your child properly and providing the child with the best care and facilities becomes your main concern and you don’t have the freedom to take time for yourself because your child becomes your purpose and priority in life.
While raising a child alone has its beauty at the same time, we need to take time to think about our personal needs and the state of our mental health. In this article, I’ll help you explore the hardest thing about being a single mom and offer some perspective shifts to navigate these difficulties with grace and resilience.
4 Toughest Challenges Single Moms Face
1) Balancing multiple responsibilities: One of the hardest aspects of being a single mom is taking on many responsibilities. Single moms often find themselves as the sole provider, caregiver and emotional support system for their children. The endless to-do list can be overwhelming, leaving them completely drained as they try to balance work, housework, parenting and personal needs.
Imagine you have a meeting you can’t miss, but your child has a dental appointment he can’t miss, both at the same time – it’s happened to me so many times and sometimes I have to choose my work over his needs. sometimes her needs over mine. There is always a sense of guilt and pressure which is the practicality of life and we will always find ourselves in situations like these because we have no alternative. But you make it, you find ways, you make it. Free yourself from this guilt.
2) Financial strain: Financial pressure is another major and hardest of all challenges faced by single mothers. Raising children without the support of a partner can be extremely taxing on the financial side. Imagine a world where the income of two is not enough, how can a single parent meet all the needs of one in every uncertain situation in the midst of the cost of living crisis?
Single moms may need to supplement their income and work extra to cover daily expenses, childcare costs, education, health care, and more. Single parents who are the sole caregivers do not see this as an option for rest and time off. I never got a license even when I was diagnosed with diplopia (double vision). No one forced me to work, but when you’re holding the fort alone, you can’t rest. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone as it eventually leads to complete exhaustion, but sometimes we don’t have options. Seek support and take time off if you can.
3) Emotional exhaustion: Balancing the demands of parenting, work and personal life can take an emotional toll and leave little time for self-care and emotional well-being. Single mothers often experience feelings of loneliness, stress and exhaustion.
Building a support system from family, friends, and other single moms can provide much-needed emotional support. Taking time for self-care, engaging in activities that bring joy, and talking to someone can help maintain emotional resilience.
4) Limited time for self: With an endless list of responsibilities, finding time for yourself is never easy. I try to set aside little pockets of time for activities I enjoy, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. It could be reading a book-even a page, writing, coloring, baking, going for a walk or taking up a hobby, whatever helps. Prioritizing self-care allows single mothers to rejuvenate, reducing stress and increasing overall happiness.
Being a single parent is undoubtedly a difficult journey, but it is filled with immeasurable love, strength and resilience that you draw from your little one. I try to prioritize and create a realistic schedule that can help relieve pressure, allowing me to manage my time effectively. By recognizing the more difficult aspects of single motherhood and seeking support, resources and self-care, single parents can face these challenges with grace, ensuring a brighter future for themselves and their children.
love and light,
